All that is good in rock music had its origins in the years 1968 - 1973*.

Change my mind.

*give or take a year or so either way.

Rumours 1977. Not really rock I suppose but has some great guitaring from Lindsey Buckingham.

Also Pink Floyd's The Wall, 1979. Some of Gilmour's best guitar solos.

The best selling album in the world during 1968 and 1973 was the soundtrack to The Sound of Music.

Come on, no shifty subclauses. If you’re going to be bold, be bold.

Five singles and five albums from the period to back up your highly dubious claim.

Lawlsie - 19 May 2022 17:59:21 (#9 of 142)

Does Dire Straits count as rock? I offer Brother In Arms, 1985. Also Love Over Gold, 1982.

Springsteen The River, 1980, and Born in the USA, 1984

Rock is a very broad church from soft to hard and everything mentioned so far, except for Hatters being silly, is Rock.

I respect Eli hugely, but I think he is wrong here. There is good stuff in the period he has chosen, and good stuff outside it. Let us listen to what we like and share it and enjoy it, worrying not about the date, and ignoring those who have never emotionally left sixth form and whose only joy in life is mocking the tastes of others. Just hang loose. Man.

Dire Straits ain’t gonna change anyone’s mind.

But, yeah, Rock needs defining here.

Rage against the machine.

Smashing pumpkins. Red hot chillis.

thisonehasalittlehat - 19 May 2022 18:39:06 (#18 of 142)

All of punk and post punk because it's not bloody dire straits. (I quite like dire straits, but I still hate dire straits if you know what I mean).

breakfast - 19 May 2022 18:39:52 (#19 of 142)

The vegetable years. Damn chillis for not being veg.
