A new "what does September mean to you?" thread

Nothing very poetic for me. More how the fuck is it September again? January was only, like, five minutes ago.

I agree. Still, I like September. A slight chill in the evenings. The beginnings of that lovely autumnal light. Planting bulbs for Spring.

We need to jump straight March or April, none of this crappy autumn and winter rubbish.

6 weeks left before the heating goes on.

Still, mustn't grumble.

Fuck off.

And "Earth Wind And Fire"

New term, new students - and this year, a new building and colleagues

The last of summer - drinking chilled retsina on the front steps as twilight gathers in the street. That annual moment of surprise at how dark it is, how suddenly the night arrives. Looking wistfully back over the summer that is coming to an end, whilst looking forward to autumn pleasures.

This September - a week in Jersey at the start of the month, searching for that 1980s Bergerac vibe. Then later in the month a few days in Jordan for work.

Pinsharp peaks in the brilliant sunshine in Glencoe (when it's not raining.)

none of this crappy autumn and winter rubbish.

Autumn is fine. Winter is crap.

Have you ever read The History Man, Fleur? You probably have. The opening couple of pages superbly capture that start of term atmosphere.

Really looking forward to September holiday in Piedmont.

Back to school.

Next holiday: half term.

Oh September. I love it. The nights start drawing in - the stars and planets are becoming visible earlier in the evening, promising a universe of infinite possibilities and adventure. In the garden squashes and fruit are ready, and the first of the leafy green vegetables. The infernal heat* and mugginess finally eases and I can start thinking about the comfort of autumn clothes. Tights and boots. Snuggly jumpers and warm coats. It's time to anticipate chilly mornings; sparkly frosts and spiders' webs. Huffing out your breath to make a little fog. Term starts; a new module, new notebooks and pens, and little sticky tabs for marking the important pages in text books.

I love September.

I have taken a screenshot of your post, Cordelia. It sums up just about everything I love about autumn, but tend to forget because I'm too hung up on how it turns into winter. I've just got a lovely new desk for this year's study.

Spiders everywhere, with their bad attitudes. More darkness every day, and soon there'll be more coldness too, and ruddy Xmas. January starts on 27 December.

Another year closer the grave.
