What do you appreciate most about the UK?

Inspired by coming back from holiday.

For me, countryside that is varied, lush and almost uniformly pleasing to look at. Not that I'd live in the country, God no.

The ridiculousness of it all.

If you live in the UK, you can leave the UK.

If you live anywhere else, you can't.

So there are plenty of options for a more hopeful future which are not available elsewhere.

The invincible green suburbs.

The supermarkets

Shadrack22 - 27 Oct 2017 13:39:41 (#5 of 197)

Lack of enthusiasm. I remember watching footage of the 1979 Iranian revolution and being perplexed by people marching around with placards that read ‘God is great.’ Down with that sort of carrying on.

The TV

#5 Did you not witness the death of diana?

TRaney - 27 Oct 2017 13:40:39 (#9 of 197)

No that was just somebody that looked like me

WibbleAgain - 27 Oct 2017 13:41:09 (#10 of 197)

The BBC. We can moan all we like about how it's just a shadow of its former self and it's not worth bothering, but when we see what's on offer elsewhere, we realise just how good it is.

By "death of diana" I of course mean the cultural event that flowed from the above which through synecdoche (or one of thsoe bloody figures of speech) I am associating with the event itself; I'm not asking whether you were leaning out of the window a black sedan clutching a telephoto lens camera.

Moschops - 27 Oct 2017 13:41:49 (#14 of 197)

The underlying principles of the NHS

WibbleAgain - 27 Oct 2017 13:41:51 (#15 of 197)

The gardens.

Shadrack22 - 27 Oct 2017 13:42:10 (#16 of 197)

That was just a one-off, Hatters. It passed.

Moschops - 27 Oct 2017 13:43:20 (#17 of 197)

It passed.

I'm not sure, I still think it permeates our current culture

WibbleAgain - 27 Oct 2017 13:43:46 (#18 of 197)

I'd no idea hatters appreciated Diana so much.

TRaney - 27 Oct 2017 13:43:57 (#19 of 197)

<leaves cuddly ALF on thread>

Sunfish - 27 Oct 2017 13:44:35 (#20 of 197)

The beautiful chaos of it all. Plus, everywhere else is either a) a bit humourless, b) a bit killy or c) a bit too far away.
