No smilies, no avatars, no flashing gifs. Just discuss the issues of the day, from last night's telly via football to science or philosophy.

It’s Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996

There’s no internet yet, no DVR. What are you doing on a Saturday night?

I can't imagine Phillip would have been too happy about it if he'd found you.

Student, in my 3rd year, living back on campus. Pretty much tipped over into full-blown alcoholism at this point, but with good friends around me.

Would most likely have started drinking when the pubs opened at 11, moving through groups of friends as the day progressed. May have headed into town in the afternoon, but it was a bad place to be on a weekend evening. Head down to campus bar, moving through groups of friends as one wanted to do something else and I wanted to keep drinking.

Probably end up with several takeaway bottles from the bar in someone's room.

Would probably either end up passing out, get really angry and do something stupid to myself, or get absolutely hysterically upset, and end up calling one of my friends to calm me down.

Fun days.

Oh, then I'd probably run out of cigarettes and be forced to buy the rip off vending machine ones on a long walk as half of them were out of stock.

Would be out filming a local gig at the Cultural cafe bar in Plymouth with CSV media trainees.

Well I have a diary so I could look it up. But from memory, probably watching TV tho no idea what would've been on then.

Playing a DJ set at The Orbit, Morley

Atticus - 15 Nov 2021 16:21:12 (#9 of 66)

Gladiators on ITV (sans Jet).

staticgirl - 15 Nov 2021 16:21:59 (#10 of 66)

Probably drawing comics, whilst listening to music and wondering why my boyfriend said he loved me but never actually wanted to see me (and no it wasn't because he was married. He was still living at home with his mum). If I was lucky we were down the pub until Match of The Day was on.

Lawlsie - 15 Nov 2021 16:32:07 (#11 of 66)

What happened to the boyfriend Static? Reminds me of the line in the Beach Boys song I Get Around

None of the guys go steady cos it wouldn't be right to leave their best girl home on a Saturday night.

Coming home from football, stopping at a chippie. If no football, watching telly or out at a play or fillum.

Gestating. Can't remember what else really. Living in a tiny rented place and spending most of my time commuting.

I had the internet at Uni in 1996. I was probably getting drunk on a Saturday night in Nov '96 and committing all manner of fashion crimes.

There was internet wasn't there?

Maybe getting ready for a few sherberts in the Nottingham Arms.

cozzer - 15 Nov 2021 16:54:34 (#16 of 66)

Two years before Film Unlimited, the forerunner of Guardian All Talk.

cozzer - 15 Nov 2021 16:55:05 (#17 of 66)

Or was it called Guardian Unlimited Talk? It started in 1998, anyway.

staticgirl - 15 Nov 2021 16:55:18 (#18 of 66)

#11 He properly broke my heart. I haven't had a relationship since.

There was definitely internet (one of the email addresses I still have I got in August 96), but not so many PCs in homes and certainly not on phones. There would have been phone calls and some texting by the hip and with it.

Oldbathrobe1 - 15 Nov 2021 16:57:25 (#20 of 66)

My son was 9 months old, I was staring blearily at things. All the time.

Ginmonkey - 15 Nov 2021 16:59:37 (#21 of 66)

There was internet as I started university in October 1996 and the computers in the library and 24 hour computer centre had internet. But It was not used much for social stuff.

Only well off students had mobile phones. I didn't get one until my first proper job in early 2000.

solomongursky - 15 Nov 2021 16:59:52 (#22 of 66)

Taking speed in Soho probably.
