It’s Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996

There’s no internet yet, no DVR. What are you doing on a Saturday night?

I was in the same flat as I'm in now, 10 years into my civil service career (with 12 years still to go), with an unchanged relational status of "Single".

Being a Saturday, I had probably watched Gladiators (if it had been on) and may have been considering ordering a pizza, or cooking some burgers from the local butchers (now long gone).

Something like that, anyway.

Probably drinking in the Good Mixer, Inverness Street.

Was Graham from Blur at the bar?

Probably drinking in the Good Mixer, Inverness Street.

In 1996 my team won VHS videos of The Usual Suspects, Flipper the Dolphin and (IIRC) Reservoir Dogs at their midweek quiz night.

November '96 I had just moved down south, so last night I had done my insane commute from Cheltenham to Scarborough (!) And would be at my tiny flat with my lovely girlfriend and her horrible hamster.

I suspect the day had involved a fry up, a bit of sexytimes and probably a row.

With luck tonight would feature a piss up and dirty burger on the way back from Bacchus.

In retrospect it was a great time, with life all ahead of us. At the time it was complicated and a bit oppressive as we made everything a fucking opera.

Was Graham from Blur at the bar?

It was always rumoured to be the drinking establishment of the London Britpoppers, Blur, Suede, Elastica. I think by 1996 they were too famous.
