I danced with a man, who danced with a girl who danced with the Prince of Wales: daisy chains of flings

Shirley Maclaine had a long running affair with Lord Louis Mountbatten.

Mountbattens wife Edwina had a long running affair with Jarwarhal Nehru.

Vintage gossip to find the 6 degrees of separation between the oddest set of people. Marriages and verified affairs please

Me and Lilo Lil off Bread, several degrees of separation. She was from Belfast, so I could possibly have cut out the intervening stages and saved us all a lot of trouble.

#1 page deleted!

#2 seems to have been acknowledged they were very friendly.

Can't claim a fling, but I was briefly a fellow school-gate parent with someone who had been out with Blake Fielder-Civil just before he hooked up with Amy Winehouse

Does that win any points?

Ugggh.

Those kind of stories, written by posh people in the 1920s, seem to imply that only about 6 people existing who actually mattered, all of whom were fucking each other and one of whom was always the Prince of Wales.

Never mind 6 degrees of separation, even two degrees would have been unthinkable exotic for that milieu

Shizza Maclaine and Mount Batten of Berg?

Really?

Oldbathrobe1 - 27 Mar 2022 21:53:31 (#10 of 89)

In a previous life, yes.

I have met and chatted at length at a party one of Amy Winehouse's first loves and a subject of several songs, which thus puts me five degrees from Ming.

We didn't talk about Amy, we talked about our jobs mostly. Later somebody told me he was Amy's ex.

If just meeting someone counts, I studied under Stephen Runciman, who went to Eton with George Orwell and played piano duets with the last Emperor of China. I also studied under Prince Dimitri Dimitrievich Obolensky, a descendant of St Vladimir of Kiev.

I read several of his books a few decades ago, when I was very much into the History of the Byzantium empire.

"Meeting" doesn't count (I've met Blair and Diana so am a maximum of two links away from anyone of any significance between 1980 and 2010), but "studying under" is a bit more than that, I'd suggest - certainly past first base and closing on second.

I slept with someone who slept with someone who slept with someone who slept with Tilda Swinton.

While it is fairly normal in the early days of a relationship to run through your exes, I do not see the circumstances where one would also go through the prior or subsequent lovers of your exes. Therefore I don't know how this thread can have a future.

Agaliarept - 28 Mar 2022 10:51:56 (#19 of 89)

I slept with a girl who slept with a mate of mine who had an ex who left him for Hagop Tchaparian, guitarist from late 90s punk pop also rans Symposium.

That's the best I can do.

His history of the crusades is very good, because he had enough languages to look beyond the standard western sources. They're generally held to be surpassed now because of new information being available, which is fair, but they're still excellent, especially as just an enjoyable read.

However, his verdict is also unfashionable- that the crusades were another barbarian incursion into the last bastion of the ancient world. In this he was correct. Possibly more so with regard to Bohemond and Tancred than the contingents led by the legate Adhemar of Le Puy and Count Raymond of Toulouse, but nonetheless the First Crusade was as much a continuation of the Norman invasion of Byzantium as anything else. The Sicilian Normans had taken over where their Swedish Viking kinsmen had left off- the Rus has attacked across the Black Sea any time the Imperial army and navy were absent.

Then, in 971 at Dorostolon the question was answered as to what would happen if Vikings had met Romans. John Tzimiskes sent a fleet equipped with Greek fire up the river behind the city to cut off their retreat, a very definite declaration of intent. He besieged the city and defeated several Viking attacks on the open plain. The Vikings responded with human sacrifice, and there were armed women found among the dead. The lesson being that flamethrowers beat Vikings.

but I digress.
