Why are we seeing the word "Detox" everywhere and does it mean anything valid?

Seems like everything is about giving your body a detox these days and the sceptic in me just thinks that unless you have recently been poisoned by a secret russian agent or similar you probably don't need any of this stuff.

There is a woman on my local facebook group advertising a 'tooth detox' for example and people are signing up for it until they find she is charging £72, presumably for her just to pop round yer living room and slap a bit of charcoal paste or similar on your teeth.

It's all bolox.

Delighted_User - 29 Apr 2018 22:09:36 (#2 of 37)

I don't know why they're allowed to make the claims they do. Unless, as Ms K says, they provide treatment for those affected by toxins.

TRaney - 29 Apr 2018 22:10:11 (#3 of 37)

It’s because everything is ‘toxic’ now.

Your liver is your detoxifier. If healthy, it works fine and you don't need anything else.

KizzyK - 29 Apr 2018 22:14:39 (#5 of 37)

But Mach she studied LEVEL 2 BEAUTY THERAPY, she must be an expert right?!

Carefully just says 'studied' not awarded or achieved....

Tommy sums it up very well.

"Why are we seeing the word "Detox" everywhere?"

Because it sells. Simple as that.

"Your liver is your detoxifier. If healthy, it works fine and you don't need anything else."

Yep, what machiavelli said.

"Your aura is looking a bit ragged, Mrs Ogglethwaite - shall I buff your temples with the crystals again?"

Troubled with toxins? Start your day the wheatgrass way:

Ginmonkey - 09 May 2018 07:46:33 (#10 of 37)

Why would you get a beauty therapist to "detox your teeth"?

There are properly trained dental hygienists who will give your teeth a deep clean. If you have gum problems there are specialists who will clean your gums to prevent infection.

KizzyK - 09 May 2018 09:39:02 (#11 of 37)

I know right? Bizarrely lots of gullible people were going for it though. A fool and his money are soon parted etc.

demoninatutu - 09 May 2018 09:49:40 (#12 of 37)

Pah! You poor sheeple are under the sway of Big Dental, making their fat wads of cash from your ignorance!!!! DO YOUR YOUTUBE RESEARCH!!!1!

My SiL is exactly like this. I have to bite my tongue when I'm around her as she is always giving everyone her latest piece of advice on what food stuff will kill you.

Only this weekend she tried to convince my wife to put my 3 year old on a dairy free diet as he has a small bit of eczema on his legs.

She's an intelligent woman (was a barrister until some shrewd housing sales meant she could basically retire at 35) so her family listen intently to her latest proclamations while I just sit there shaking my head.

She one tried to convince me that the reason I've suffered depression most of my adult life is because there's the wrong sort of bacteria in my intestine. She gave me a book that was basically a 300 page add for a diet plan.

Now she had major issues with her digestive system when she was born and had a series of ops. It makes sense that this stuff really works for people with problems that don't get solved easily by normal medicine.

She never shuts up about Gluten intolerance.

Interestingly, we all ate round hers this weekend and all the adults who she fed have had the Ertha Kits. So you tell me.

It's all bollocks is my position. Everything in moderation works for the majority.

There's some recent science to suggest that gut bacteria may have a greater effect on the body than previously thought but your SiL couldn't possibly know whether that is behind your depression or not.

I have a friend who loves internet diagnosis - it can get quite wearing.

Yeah probably should caveat, I'm not suggesting for a minute that people don't genuinely have problems caused by their bodies reactions to what they eat. I don't believe Celiac disease isn't a thing.

It's the self diagnosis and self prescribed treatment that bugs me.

Yes! The bloody certainty shown by amateur shamans.

Agaliarept - 09 May 2018 10:05:33 (#17 of 37)

The bloody certainty shown by amateur shamans.

When she was explaining to my wife about fucking about with my son's diet, she was using all kinds of language like: "OK so what you need to do is this..."..."You'll need to start removing this from his diet first, then that"...

Like we'd already agreed to give her power over my son's health. Christ if they just had a tiny amount of humility and were just sharing what they'd heard but as you put it, it's the certainty that really grinds my gears.

It's nice to see a poisoner who's enthusiastic about their work, though.

Agaliarept - 09 May 2018 10:09:14 (#19 of 37)

She had a good go with the fennel slop pizza she made. I've definitely shat out an organ or two over the last couple of days.

SinnerBoy - 09 May 2018 10:12:54 (#20 of 37)

machiavelli -

Your liver is your detoxifier.

Nothing more than that needs to be said on the subject. Also, you get the utterly ignorant hippie woo-woo merchants, who think that you can change your blood chemistry to be alkaline. Whilst not knowing about, or understanding the hoops, through which your body jumps, to keep your blood in a range of 0.1 pH.

In the alkaline range.....
