Tennis (again)

A new tennis thread. Apparently we're too long and slow.

We are tennis enthusiasts, not caterpillars!

Anyway, nice new thread. Roll on RG.

It's because we are old.

I am actually quite long and slow.

Venus is also old, very long, and slower than she used to be, but she won Dubai last week, beating Alize Cornet in the final, who had beaten Serena in the semis.

On the way to the finals, she beat Elena Vesnina, Ana Ivanovic, Flavia Pennetta and Caroline Wozniacki.

We're coming up to an important part of the early season: Indian Wells starts next week, and Miami a fortnight after that.

Lots of points for Murray to defend - he didn't do well in IW last year, but he won Miami. After that, not much for him to defend until Queens.

That's impressive. And so glad am I to be reminded of Indian Wells, in this long cold and wet winter I'd forgotten all about these upcoming matches. I'm a bit long and definitely slow about getting out of bed these nasty mornings.

Yersinia - 25 Feb 2014 00:30:34 (#4 of 25796)

Murray is playing Acapulco this week, apparently.

racquet - 25 Feb 2014 15:45:30 (#5 of 25796)

Yes his first match is tonight vs Andujar (who had 2 MPs against Nadal at he weekend). I say 'tonight' but it's actually morning: 4:00am for you 5:00 for me. Gulbis and Dimitrov are the other noteworthy names lurking in his half.

dreams99 - 26 Feb 2014 08:33:15 (#6 of 25796)

Andujar's a bit dangerous. He took the first set off Andy, but Murray won in the end.

dreams99 - 26 Feb 2014 08:33:46 (#7 of 25796)

James Ward won his first round match in Dubai and will play Youzhny next.

Robson out of Indian Wells with a wrist injury:

dreams99 - 26 Feb 2014 21:35:12 (#10 of 25796)

Ward lost to Youzhny.

Yersinia - 26 Feb 2014 23:33:59 (#11 of 25796)

Laura's wrist injury is quite worrying.

Heather got a wildcard into the qualies - the entry list was based on rankings of the week before she won Midland, so she was ranked too low to get into the qualies directly. Jo Konta, Dan Evans and James Ward will also play qualies.

dreams99 - 27 Feb 2014 07:54:29 (#12 of 25796)

Murray beat Sousa and will play Simon in the quarters.

Yersinia - 27 Feb 2014 09:18:23 (#13 of 25796)

Murray has an excellent head-to-head v Simon.

Yersinia - 28 Feb 2014 08:59:08 (#14 of 25796)

...which just got a bit better.

Into the semis, where he meets Dimitrov, who he is 3-0 against.

Dom Inglot is in the dubles semi with Treat Huey. They play Lopez and Mirnyi.

dreams99 - 28 Feb 2014 09:18:03 (#15 of 25796)

Close one, Simon was serving for the match at 6-1 5-3.

dreams99 - 28 Feb 2014 18:23:33 (#16 of 25796)

Federer beat Djokovic in Dubai.

pushkin - 28 Feb 2014 18:49:16 (#17 of 25796)

Wow! good for Fed.

dreams99 - 28 Feb 2014 19:41:23 (#18 of 25796)

New mickey mouse tournament to be played at the end of the season:

dreams99 - 01 Mar 2014 10:45:30 (#19 of 25796)

Murray lost to Dimitrov in 3 sets, including 2 tiebreaks.

Yersinia - 01 Mar 2014 10:58:45 (#20 of 25796)

Maybe Dimitrov is finally beginning to make good on his promise.

Federer will play Berdych in the final in Dubai. Berdych will remain ahead of Murray in the rankings - Murray could have ovetaken him by winning Acapulco. He overtook Del Potro this week.

Dimitrov plays Anderson in the Acapulco final.

Ferrer retired in the QF of Acapulco, and has pulled out of Indian Wells.
