Athletics

With the world championships starting on Saturday, it's time we had a dedicated thread for athletics:

Prize money:

$60 000 for an individual gold medal, $100 000 for a new world record.

Real shame about Katarina Johnson-Thompson failing to record a distance in the long jump round of the heptathalon. Horrible way to go out but I take my hat off to her for carrying on regardless and recording a personal best in the javelin. Her time will come.

Of course, that means that Jessica Ennis-Hill should get gold with minimal effort now which is all kinds of wonderful.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 12:13:16 (#3 of 2112)

Wow! Bolt trips yet still posts a sub 10 second time in the 100 metres.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 12:17:43 (#4 of 2112)

Quite a scrappy race.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 12:18:27 (#5 of 2112)

9.77 from Gatlin.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 12:20:11 (#6 of 2112)

Drugged or not, he just looks like he's running a perfect race.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 12:31:57 (#7 of 2112)

Yep, he looks invincible. Having said that, Bolt's recovery suggests he could comfortably run a 9.7 or quicker and make Gatlin suffer.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 12:46:18 (#8 of 2112)

Nice cheer for Katarina J-T. It must be very tough for her out there after such a huge disappointment.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:06:01 (#9 of 2112)

Go Jess!

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:08:27 (#10 of 2112)

She wins! What a superstar she is. A privilege to watch her.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 13:10:42 (#11 of 2112)

That was great. She could have sat behind the Canadian, and still got gold, but she was having none of that.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:13:15 (#12 of 2112)

I think what she's achieved is astonishing. For me she is the greatest athlete, man or woman, that we've ever seen. I know that's a fairly meaningless and utterly subjective statement but she puts Daley Thompson firmly in his place, I'd say.

foxybrown - 23 Aug 2015 13:14:38 (#13 of 2112)

Have you abandoned the other thread?

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:15:45 (#14 of 2112)

Sorry, looked for another thread this morning and only found this one.

foxybrown - 23 Aug 2015 13:17:09 (#15 of 2112)

I don't think she puts Daley in his place, he's double Olympic champion and was world record holder. There's wasn't world championships in his time (or maybe the first one was at the end of his career)

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:20:14 (#16 of 2112)

I can't see Ennis-Hill ever wearing a homophobic self-congratulatory tee shirt though. It's not just her achievements but her grace and warmth as a competitor that marks her out. Her encouragement to Katarina J-T yesterday was yet another example of her decency and superb attitude.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 13:20:34 (#17 of 2112)

Hmm.

I started this thread because I never liked that we were on an Olympics thread, rather than an athletics one, and I always struggled to find it, forgetting it was in football, not sport.

But I neglected to make a link on that thread, so then the World Champs conversation started up on that one, so it's a bit of a mess now.

Bromio - 23 Aug 2015 13:21:50 (#18 of 2112)

Yes, that's why I missed it as it appears to be specifically Olympics and Commonwealth Games-related.

Yersinia - 23 Aug 2015 13:31:27 (#19 of 2112)

Jess is wonderful. Daley was a wonderful athlete in his day, too, but rather a more abrasive personality.

I really hope KJT sorts herself out. She's a great jumper, a very good runner, and I think her least good events are very technical. I think she can improve on them with experience. She has the potential to be great.

SGM1A1 - 23 Aug 2015 13:49:15 (#20 of 2112)

There's wasn't world championships in his time (or maybe the first one was at the end of his career)

Daley won the first world championships decathlon in 1983
