That Refugee team story has actually made me well up a bit after all the shit the last few days has thrown up. Kudos to the IOC for taking that stance, and to the athletes for not taking a flag of convenience.

The golf thing is odd. if I were the squash federation, I'd be livid. Golf got in by saying that all the top players would be there, that it's as important as a major, blah blah blah, and now they are all pulling out.

Yersinia - 30 Jun 2016 12:23:37 (#13 of 4619)

I think that when a sport has no history in the Olympics, the players don't feel it as the pinnacle of their sport, so they are more easily dissuaded from going.

Agaliarept - 30 Jun 2016 12:29:50 (#14 of 4619)

This is going well.

Rio isn't one of the nicest places on earth if LiveLeak videos are anything to go by.

I personally wouldn't take a family to the games as there's usually quite a bit of the city involved.

If anywhere else is looked at the olympic money rarely stays in the host country either.

Exactly.

Golf should never have been put in. Is it in for good now or can it go next time? It's not a demonstration sport is it?

melpomene - 30 Jun 2016 16:24:00 (#17 of 4619)

I think it should be kicked out again. I don't think it's a demonstration one, no, I thought it was in for the foreseeable.
