Just finished a book on US civil war cavalry, and was amazed at the interaction of man and animal.

How mechanized warfare has changed things.

Dropping a shoe, eating grass instead of oats, the army was also running on the endurance of the horse, and the whole horse culture that pervaded the nation without their considering it the way we do now.

There were no stop lights in Manhattan.

Tons of horse manure were dropped into the East River daily at one point.

Now it gets put into the White House.

There's an expression about taking preventative measures too late, originally something like locking or bolting the stable door after the horse is gone. This would generally have been the result of deliberate theft. For the most part nowadays it's used in a form where the door is secured after the horse has bolted, as though the main reason for securing the door was to prevent escape. But it's a rare horse that will be seized by wanderlust; as a rule, they're fond of being in nice warm stables where they get fed and watered. It's unlikely that people familiar with the habits of horses would have developed the idiom in this way.

Horses are fabulous, just wish I had the time, money and space to own and ride one.

I feel sorry for horses.

Amenable , Lincoln Handicap winner 1991 changed the course of my life. Backed it at 25/1 (I liked the name) with an unexpected £20 note I found in my jeans pocket the morning after a booze up.

Booked a holiday, met the woman who became the kids' mum. All most amenable.

Excellent stuff. I remember that winning although I didn't back it.

What a marvellous story, phantlers. There's even a rather unusual moral to it.

ty, that's the much abridged version, I've told it before
