Flame lit today. No spectators allowed at the ceremony.

Yersinia - 19 Mar 2020 14:09:42 (#2 of 61)

I think they need to cancel it. Make the decision now, to hold it in 2021, if things are better by then.

This is not fair on the athletes. Many cannot prepare. Qualification events are mostly cancelled. Some athletes will put themselves at risk going against their national advice to try to train effectively. And the probability is that it will still have to be cancelled or postponed.

The flame, carried in a tiny canister from Greece

Surprised airport security didn’t make them chuck it, along with their water bottles and oversized sun cream.

Arjuna - 20 Mar 2020 09:58:07 (#6 of 61)

didn't they fancy running through China

nac1001 - 22 Mar 2020 08:05:31 (#7 of 61)

SENDAI: Tens of thousands of people flocked to a cauldron with the Olympic flame in northeastern Japan over the weekend despite concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even more need to cancel/postpone the games now!

nac1001 - 23 Mar 2020 06:01:34 (#8 of 61)

It's all over. Canada and Australia have pulled out.

Yersinia - 23 Mar 2020 08:47:32 (#9 of 61)

Indeed.

Unless Japan and the IOC postpone, I expect other countries to follow suit. It's pointless and unfair taking a "wait and see" approach now.

Arjuna - 23 Mar 2020 08:48:41 (#10 of 61)

I am officially cancelling it now.

Arjuna - 23 Mar 2020 08:49:42 (#11 of 61)

doubts aren't growing, nobody still believes it will happen.

Winner - 23 Mar 2020 08:51:00 (#12 of 61)

It was obvious at least a fortnight ago it wouldn't be happening. A shame because the opening ceremony would have been awesome.

spartak - 23 Mar 2020 08:51:53 (#13 of 61)

I can’t believe it’s still not officially cancelled.

Yersinia - 23 Mar 2020 08:52:49 (#14 of 61)

It may still be awesome, but not this year.

Ginmonkey - 23 Mar 2020 08:54:56 (#15 of 61)

Even if we have flattened the curve by then, having a huge event where hundreds of thousands of people travel across the world to live and socialise at close quarters seems a bit dumb.

nac1001 - 23 Mar 2020 09:05:27 (#16 of 61)

If they don't cancel today then presumably France, Germany and Ireland will pull out tomorrow and Team GB will wait another week before pulling out :)

Yersinia - 23 Mar 2020 11:51:42 (#17 of 61)

Coe calls for postponement:

Yersinia - 24 Mar 2020 13:33:20 (#18 of 61)

Finally.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/52020134

Postponed until next year.

Arjuna - 24 Mar 2020 13:34:19 (#19 of 61)

they will just have to keep rinning round with that flame for a bit longer

nac1001 - 24 Mar 2020 13:41:38 (#20 of 61)

the event will still be called Tokyo 2020

Saves having to put all the merchandise in landfill
