Tonight I am going to settle down with a glass of beer, an egg sandwich and watch North Sea Hijack

Is this the most middle-aged man thing to do?

The main character is described (more than once on wiki) as being a misogynist, despite there being only one female role in the film. Can you shed any light upon this?

Catspyjamas16 - 11 Apr 2017 14:53:42 (#2 of 72)

Sounds a bit fishy to me.

MadamGeorge - 11 Apr 2017 14:54:21 (#3 of 72)

an egg sandwich? really? an egg sandwich?

Moschops - 11 Apr 2017 14:55:13 (#4 of 72)

imdb reckon it's called ffolkes or summat nowadays

lapsedcat - 11 Apr 2017 14:56:39 (#5 of 72)

Um, as yet I haven't watched the film, widenation, so no. Will keep you posted though!

ThreeFlewOver - 11 Apr 2017 14:57:18 (#6 of 72)

A terrorist (Anthony Perkins) holds an offshore drilling rig and production platform for ransom in the North Sea. Ffolkes (Roger Moore) a wealthy mysogynistic eccentric, volunteers to send his crack team of soldiers in to stop the terrorists. With few other options available, the British Government reluctantly accepts his help

That sounds Ah Maze Zing!

Why does it matter that Moore plays a misogynist? Why does he have two F's in his name? Why don't the UK government use their own trained special forces? How can you hope to escape with the ransom money when you're in the middle of the North Sea?

Shadrack22 - 11 Apr 2017 15:00:27 (#7 of 72)

North Sea Hijack. Was this from that thread about British 1970s films, Lapsed? What about the one about a romance between Malcolm McDowell and Nanette Newman (in wheelchairs).

When I was at university, I'd worked out that the cheapest lunch at the canteen that would keep me functioning and slightly drunk was an egg sandwich and a pint of mild.

You just didn't want to sit behind me.

TinyMcOtter - 11 Apr 2017 15:01:51 (#9 of 72)

Egg sandwich? Fried, with brown sauce?

HouseOfLametta - 11 Apr 2017 15:04:34 (#10 of 72)

No! Chopped up, salad cream.

solomongursky - 11 Apr 2017 15:04:58 (#11 of 72)

The only bit I remember from this is Moore in a beard having a whisky at 7am during training to "cut through the phlegm".

HouseOfLametta - 11 Apr 2017 15:10:00 (#12 of 72)

Dr Terror's House Of Horror was on last night. That's a hell of a film.

Sadly, I wasn't quite drunk enough to watch it.

lapsedcat - 11 Apr 2017 15:26:51 (#13 of 72)

I watched it recently (Dr Terror) - Christopher Lee and THAT hand were the best things in it. Aside from Fluff Freeman.

xDiggy - 11 Apr 2017 15:31:55 (#14 of 72)

I recall a fine childhood evening watching this film and then re-enacting it with an oil rig built of lego.

upgoerfive - 11 Apr 2017 15:37:09 (#15 of 72)

I think the one in the film was made of lego too.

widenation - 11 Apr 2017 15:40:56 (#16 of 72)

I'm sure they could have stretched the budget to Meccano.

upgoerfive - 11 Apr 2017 15:41:10 (#17 of 72)

Moore's character lives as a recluse, and passes his time with cats and knitting. He's kind of half commando, half baglady.

HouseOfLametta - 11 Apr 2017 15:43:24 (#18 of 72)

I had a girlfriend like that.

upgoerfive - 11 Apr 2017 15:45:51 (#19 of 72)

I think we all did ...

lapsedcat - 11 Apr 2017 15:46:55 (#20 of 72)

No spoilers please. I want to watch beardy Roger battling hijackers without knowing if he survives or not.
