How did London get flocks of parakeets?

We were down there at the weekend, and Kensington Gardens was full of the noisy green feathered buggers!

How did they start breeding in the wild in London?

They escaped from The African Queen set.

There are a lot of stories about where they came from. I like to think all the stories are true, to some degree.

Same reason there are loads of ewoks round Twickenham.

FleurDuMal - 24 Feb 2019 17:51:34 (#6 of 107)

What do they eat?

FleurDuMal - 24 Feb 2019 17:51:47 (#7 of 107)

Not ewoks.

Alien was filmed in the UK too, so that was a lucky escape.

Tons round here in SE London, all year round.

AlanII - 24 Feb 2019 17:55:02 (#10 of 107)

Aliens?

FleurDuMal - 24 Feb 2019 17:55:35 (#11 of 107)

They’re green too!

They are down in Plymouth as well. Hanging around Central Park.

Smoking and gobbing like the youths?

A population of African clawed toads also exists in Wales. The toads were once used as pregnancy indicators, because they produce eggs if injected with the urine of pregnant women.

But with the advent of pregnancy indicator sticks, many labs simply released them into the wild.

Wht?

Something like a progesterone reaction.

solomongursky - 24 Feb 2019 18:10:58 (#16 of 107)

Run free, pregnancy indicator sticks!

That Telegraph url is such bullshit, when they ask the bird lady where they actually came from she says "God knows". Nobody's ever even bleeding seen a parakeet in The African Queen.

thisonehasalittlehat - 24 Feb 2019 18:16:21 (#18 of 107)

They come from India. Duh.

Dubris - 24 Feb 2019 18:18:27 (#19 of 107)

Parakeets aplenty on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent too. It must be very puzzling for the seagulls to have other birds flying about that are as noisy as them.

solomongursky - 24 Feb 2019 18:20:06 (#20 of 107)

In Africa it occurs across a broad area south of the Sahara, stretching from Senegambia in the west to Somalia in the east.
