And beware lest ye don’t. Take it away, whimsy fans

First!

Sabacious - 10 Oct 2020 22:04:28 (#2 of 1829)

Aha!

helenskywalker - 10 Oct 2020 22:06:37 (#3 of 1829)

Innit!

slicey - 10 Oct 2020 22:09:29 (#4 of 1829)

Wotcha!

Dubris - 10 Oct 2020 22:20:58 (#5 of 1829)

Here's a question of modern manners. A friend has just posted some lovely family pictures on faffingaboutbook. In one of them her daughter looks distinctly pregnant. It would be rude to send a message saying "Are you going to be a lockdown grandmother?", I think - but what to do?

Dubris - 10 Oct 2020 22:22:33 (#6 of 1829)

What if she'd actually had a really, really big lunch?

Charisse - 10 Oct 2020 22:22:36 (#7 of 1829)

Don’t ask! Never ask!

Dubris - 10 Oct 2020 22:23:52 (#8 of 1829)

That decides it.

JennyRad - 10 Oct 2020 22:25:37 (#9 of 1829)

Unless you can actually see the head crowning ...!

That said, if it's not the possibly-pregnant woman, and depending on the temperament of the possibly-pregnant woman's mother, you might be able to send a very private message saying something like "I know it's not the done thing, and I could easily be very wrong, but do you have happy family news that I'm inferring from the lovely photo of $daughter? In which case, how splendid! And if not, I'm terribly, terribly sorry for making such an embarrassing assumption."

But I'd only do it in a message to someone I was very sure was going to take it the right way.

Maybe the daughter has just been guzzling away since March to assuage the boredom.

Dubris - 10 Oct 2020 22:30:17 (#11 of 1829)

It's a minefield, I tell you.

goldfinch - 10 Oct 2020 22:30:28 (#12 of 1829)

Don't go there, Dubs.

helenskywalker - 10 Oct 2020 22:33:59 (#13 of 1829)

Nope. Never assume. It makes a twat out of the both of yez, or something.

pranzingfrogg - 10 Oct 2020 22:34:27 (#14 of 1829)

Wait to see if there is an announcement.

Dubris - 10 Oct 2020 22:34:52 (#15 of 1829)

I shall prepare myself to be pleasantly surprised at some point in the future.

The daughter really *does* look pregnant and is pictured with a young man not known to me with his arm round her.

slicey - 10 Oct 2020 22:40:11 (#16 of 1829)

Just watch out for meteors in case there has been any moral impropriety.

JennyRad - 10 Oct 2020 22:44:19 (#17 of 1829)

The daughter really *does* look pregnant and is pictured with a young man not known to me with his arm round her.

Oh! In that case, you've a subtle option: "Who's $daughter's young man? Is it serious?"

If it's pregnancy-serious, she'll tell you.

JennyRad - 10 Oct 2020 22:45:28 (#18 of 1829)

I'm taking beware less ye don't offend seriously, here, obviously.

surferboogiewhatever - 10 Oct 2020 23:11:58 (#19 of 1829)

Found you!

helenskywalker - 10 Oct 2020 23:28:41 (#20 of 1829)

My sister phoned me today because she's worried about poorly us. She and my nephew are coming over tomorrow with all the fixings for a Sunday roast, which they will cook and we'll eat together. In amongst the other things that currently make me cry, this does.
