Toast

Our toaster died a couple of days ago. The new one ordered by MadameB arrived this afternoon. It has a bagel button.

You're on a roll TR, keep going.

TRaney - 19 Feb 2021 20:54:39 (#8 of 58)

Does yours have a frozen button too?

FleurDuMal - 19 Feb 2021 20:55:04 (#9 of 58)

If space is infinite, and God is also infinite ...

... would you like some toast?

BBBilly - 19 Feb 2021 20:55:44 (#10 of 58)

#8 Probably. The user manual has 16 pages. For a fucking toaster.

TRaney - 19 Feb 2021 20:57:06 (#11 of 58)

Don't fuck the toaster!

That's very inadvisable. And probably in the manual somewhere.

TRaney - 19 Feb 2021 20:57:45 (#12 of 58)

I've recently found myself eating quite a lot of toast. I think it is comforting in troubled times.

Arjuna - 19 Feb 2021 20:59:08 (#13 of 58)

I thought this was going to be about U-Roy

TauCeti - 19 Feb 2021 20:59:31 (#14 of 58)

I like toasted pittas; give it a quick wetting, place in toaster, switch on, when popped out, cut one side and stuff it with mozzarella, tomato a drip of olive oil an a pinch of salt; yum. Or is it too Continental?

MrPurple - 19 Feb 2021 20:59:38 (#15 of 58)

crumpets

TRaney - 19 Feb 2021 21:00:28 (#16 of 58)

Oh yeah, and muffins

TRaney - 19 Feb 2021 21:00:34 (#17 of 58)

And butteries

BBBilly - 19 Feb 2021 21:03:53 (#18 of 58)

Muffins good. Thin sliced bread bad.

CarlosFandango - 19 Feb 2021 21:24:05 (#19 of 58)

No Tau, it's not too continental.

It's heaven.

TauCeti - 19 Feb 2021 21:30:45 (#20 of 58)

:O)

ArriveAlive - 21 Feb 2021 09:45:12 (#21 of 58)

And butteries

Oh yes! Pity nowhere in the south of Oxfordshire sells them. My sister, who lives not a million miles away in Surrey, used to make them when she worked in the Bridge of Don Tesco.

Alas, none of my attempts to make any using her recipe have ever come out even close to looking or tasting like the real thing.

Dubris - 21 Feb 2021 10:57:19 (#22 of 58)

What are butteries?

yumyum - 21 Feb 2021 11:02:02 (#23 of 58)

A bagel button? I’m interested.

MrPurple - 21 Feb 2021 11:05:17 (#24 of 58)

A buttery, or rowie, is an Aberdeen delicacy.

Imagine a flat, heavy, greasy, salty bread roll.

TRaney - 21 Feb 2021 11:07:04 (#25 of 58)

It's much greasier than a bagel, more like flattened croissant.

AA, I can recommend those from the Bakehouse in Crathie if you are passing through.

BBBilly - 21 Feb 2021 11:32:29 (#26 of 58)

yumyum, the bagel button is for toasting one side more than the other.

Tinymcsmithy - 21 Feb 2021 12:32:58 (#28 of 58)

Proper bagels should only be toasted if they are not fresh. This is the law. Obviously the crap supermarket ones don’t count.

yumyum - 21 Feb 2021 12:37:45 (#29 of 58)

Link please to magic bagel one side more than the other toaster.

MrPurple - 21 Feb 2021 12:40:01 (#30 of 58)

It exists. It's called a grill.

Toast, crumpets and on occasion, muffins. Not those American fairy cake abominations, muffin muffins.

Mine is red.

popstar7 - 21 Feb 2021 18:36:31 (#34 of 58)

Does anyone else let toast go cold and just have it with butter? The butter has to be quite cool as well.

WibbleAgain - 21 Feb 2021 18:47:59 (#35 of 58)

That's a biscuit or cracker.

Snarlygog - 21 Feb 2021 18:52:40 (#36 of 58)

Toast with anchovys mashed up and sliced up for dipping in boiled eggs are refered to as Marines.

I quite like crumpets like that - well toasted and then cooled. Not absolutely cold, but just warm enough to soften but not melt the butter.

WibbleAgain - 21 Feb 2021 19:16:28 (#38 of 58)

Melba toast is good. Sadly no one sells thinly sliced bread any more.

browserbutton - 21 Feb 2021 19:18:15 (#39 of 58)

Flashback -- I once worked in the stillroom of a big hotel and had to make mountains of melba toast. WAAAH!

CarlosFandango - 21 Feb 2021 20:01:56 (#40 of 58)

refered to as Marines.

Sounds excellent.

TauCeti - 21 Feb 2021 20:30:00 (#41 of 58)

Toasted cheese butty!!!

That's a classic 'toaster burn' if I ever came across one....

Tadagee - 21 Feb 2021 20:34:26 (#42 of 58)

I assume they're called marines as they're fishy soldiers

Tomnoddy - 21 Feb 2021 20:58:57 (#43 of 58)

Cheese dreams, nothing to touch them.

popstar7 - 21 Feb 2021 21:02:56 (#44 of 58)

That's a biscuit or cracker.

No, the toast should be spongy and chewy. And the butter as cold as it can be and still be spreadable.

Tomnoddy - 21 Feb 2021 21:04:48 (#45 of 58)

Mothers used to pass cold buttered toast to us bairns through the high railings mounted on a wall round my primary school playground, every morning playtime.

SinnerBoy - 21 Feb 2021 23:00:07 (#46 of 58)

I can't stand cold toast. Neither can my daughter. She enthuses about melted butter.

browserbutton - 22 Feb 2021 06:42:10 (#47 of 58)

You could always combine the two, as Nigella demonstrates here:

Tomnoddy - 22 Feb 2021 06:57:51 (#48 of 58)

Melted unsalted butter, then cool solid unsalted butter, then salt poured over it? Nah, I don't think so.

Having said that, my mum was great at getting toast like that. I just accepted it, I never bothered to find out how she did it. My painful loss. However, I'm pretty sure it was salted butter.

popstar7 - 22 Feb 2021 12:10:41 (#49 of 58)

I use Toasta bags for super quick emergency cheese grillys.

BBBilly - 22 Feb 2021 12:40:43 (#51 of 58)

What sort of emergency requires a toasted cheese sandwich?

Antimatter - 23 Feb 2021 21:57:52 (#52 of 58)

Usually too busy/bored/cold to cook a hot lunch, so a toasted cheese sandwich made in the toaster is quick, hot & tasty.

TauCeti - 23 Feb 2021 21:58:41 (#53 of 58)

#51 Breakfast?

A cheese and ham toasty is the fifth emergency service

Tinymcsmithy - 24 Feb 2021 14:05:29 (#55 of 58)

With or without tomatoes?

Catspyjamas17 - 24 Feb 2021 14:07:29 (#56 of 58)

Does anyone else let toast go cold and just have it with butter? The butter has to be quite cool as well.

If it's thin sliced bread and you serve it in a toast rack, it's B&B toast. IKWYM and quite enjoy that myself.

Catspyjamas17 - 24 Feb 2021 14:11:38 (#57 of 58)

Had a toastie with that honey seeded bloomer bread for lunch/brunch. Butter (Aldi West Country salted), red pepper houmous, red onion, slices of red pepper and grated carrot and Aldi lentil crisps on the side.

TauCeti - 24 Feb 2021 14:59:50 (#58 of 58)

#55 sun dried tomatoes preferably.

Had a toastie of some sort for brekky, consisting in a small baguette, cut in half, and placed on top of the toast, as it wouldn't otherwise fit; does that count as a toastie? stuffed with fresh tom sliced thin, one scrambled egg with chopped mushrooms, a dash of mild chili sauce, lettuce, a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt, a fresh brew black coffee sweetened with honey.(*)

(*) not IN the toastie...
