The Young Ones: where are they now?

Inspired by this:

Neil: academic, researcher into renewable technologies. Lives in Powys, Wales

Rik: Labour activitist (Blairite/Corbynite wing).* Lives in North London

Vyvian: IT contractor, working in the finance sector. Lives in Manchester.

Mike: property developer. Lives in Southend on Sea

I can actually imagine the middle aged Rik looking a bit like John Rentoul. A massive Twitter addict, I suspect

Tylenol - 10 Jun 2021 13:22:07 (#2 of 68)

Perhaps it's the New Statesman influence but I'd imagine Rik to be a Faragist estate agent, ranting about immigrants and wasters in some Surrey golf club. Vyvian died during the first wave of Covid, contracted whilst heroically saving lives with inadequate PPE.

I mean rik is a tory councillor, neil in probably in big oil, vivian a lawyer, and who really cares about the other one.

TRaney - 10 Jun 2021 13:41:13 (#4 of 68)

I think there was an episode called ‘Oil’

DesEsseintes - 10 Jun 2021 13:49:15 (#5 of 68)

I never really watched it. It was just student bashing at the end of the day.

One of the worst programmes ever.

Tip for you - satire is only satire when it's directed at 'normal' people.

upgoerfive - 10 Jun 2021 13:55:51 (#6 of 68)

Students are normal people.

Agaliarept - 10 Jun 2021 13:56:19 (#7 of 68)

It was just student bashing at the end of the day.

C'mon, It was a bit more than *just* student bashing.

Tylenol - 10 Jun 2021 13:57:21 (#8 of 68)

By people who'd been students two years previously.

cozzer - 10 Jun 2021 14:04:33 (#9 of 68)

One of the worst programmes ever.

A huge claim.

HelenDamnation - 10 Jun 2021 14:04:36 (#10 of 68)

Robert Webb on the second episode of The Young Ones is very good at articulating why he likes it

Also Andy Stanton on the tie-in book:

Rule of Three generally a vg podcast, though feels a bit formulaic if you binge-listen.

TRaney - 10 Jun 2021 14:08:00 (#11 of 68)

It was just student bashing at the end of the day.

I loved it as a kid. I had no clue they were students or what that meant

thisonehasalittlehat - 10 Jun 2021 14:17:08 (#12 of 68)

I don't think it is student bashing at all.

helenskywalker - 10 Jun 2021 14:18:08 (#13 of 68)

If you never really watched it you can't really know.

thisonehasalittlehat - 10 Jun 2021 14:19:57 (#14 of 68)

That's a good point, however one can make a judgement on whether something is the worst thing ever, whether one has watched it or not. Otherwise, well, where would we be?

TRaney - 10 Jun 2021 14:20:03 (#15 of 68)

DesEsseintes is just annoyed because it got called anarchic.

thisonehasalittlehat - 10 Jun 2021 14:20:46 (#16 of 68)

Rik is definitely one of those anarchists who is going to end up as a right wing tory, and I think we've all met them.

cozzer - 10 Jun 2021 14:26:23 (#17 of 68)

It’s very different question from The Old Ones: Where Are They Now?

FrankieTeardrop - 10 Jun 2021 14:31:02 (#18 of 68)

Rik is definitely one of those anarchists who is going to end up as a right wing tory, and I think we've all met them.

Perhaps there is nothing left wing about anarchy

thisonehasalittlehat - 10 Jun 2021 14:33:04 (#19 of 68)

When I was at university there were a whole bunch of revolutionary communists who combined an authoritarian attitude with an over-intellectual approach to undestanding society. I reckon they all became tories.

It is sometimes said that the authoritarian / anti-authoritarian divide is starker than the left / right divide, and ironically I think a lot of people who are drawn to anarchism are actually quite authoritarian in outlook.

thisonehasalittlehat - 10 Jun 2021 14:34:27 (#20 of 68)

I mean it "do what you want" right, but that's means for many anarchists "I do what I want and you can fuck off". What happened to punk is instructive here.
