Lost One of Those Things

Post your whimsy-laden thoughts here.

Hurrah for being up North!

crabbyoldbat - 31 Aug 2021 18:32:03 (#1042 of 2017)

Yay for the (dull and cold) North

airynothing - 31 Aug 2021 18:40:32 (#1043 of 2017)

Congratulations on the move!

slicey - 31 Aug 2021 18:43:24 (#1044 of 2017)

I am bored of the north already. It's completely lacking world class art galleries for me to not visit.

How does a comedy radio quiz show where people try and guess the age of various celebrities get commissioned, let alone made, and then actually aired? They're troupers and are doing their best, but you can hear the despair in their eyes. It's like a pub argument ten minutes before closing time about which footballer was the oldest ever to play centre forward at an FA cup final.

HouseOfLametta - 31 Aug 2021 18:48:44 (#1046 of 2017)

It's Richard Osman. Everything he does is a baffling success.

Slicey, this is the modern age. It's not that you've lost the chance to not visit London galleries, but rather that you have the opportunity to not visit galleries in Leeds, Sunderland and Edinburgh.

slicey - 31 Aug 2021 19:01:35 (#1047 of 2017)

I will embrace my Northern heritage and not visit them all soon.

My brother has shaved his head and put on 2.5 stone. He looks like he should be talking Brexit in a flat roof pub.

Congratulations on making it out of the Home Counties and into the Northern Powerhouse, Slicey.

My consultant appointment went quite well, even if broaching the possibility that I am joining Slicey's club - the P for Progressive word is being bandied around - was a bit meh. It started interestingly when the consultant came into the waiting room and said, "Eileen." "Eileen?" "EILEEN?"

As it was only me and a middle-aged man in a wheelchair, I don't know why it took me so long to twig that maybe he meant me.

This makes up for the time I committed the unpardonable sin of asking him, conversationally, which part of Australia he was from.

New Zealand.

That’s the furthest away part of Australia.

Slicey - don’t forget to not go to art galleries in Manchester!

JennyRad - 31 Aug 2021 18:10:52 (#1050 of 2017)

Bury has a fairly charming - if not necessarily world class - art gallery to not visit as well.

Indeed I noticed a sign yesterday claiming that the Durham Light Infantry museum has acquired an art gallery which I, for one, will continue to not visit every time I'm in the area.

Eileen sounds *nothing* like impedimenta.

breakfast - 31 Aug 2021 19:12:47 (#1052 of 2017)

I’ve been to Bury art gallery. It is a pleasant but not world class one.

Cordelia - 31 Aug 2021 19:18:29 (#1053 of 2017)

Progressive is indeed meh Eileen. Let’s hope it is not an actuality.

Ginmonkey - 31 Aug 2021 19:23:32 (#1054 of 2017)

#1045 in a strong field of baffling and unfunny R4 panel shows that was by far the worst I have ever heard.

The low point was the person who decided that Gloria Estefan was 74. 74!

limegreen - 31 Aug 2021 19:38:48 (#1055 of 2017)

I guessed 59

She is 63. 64 tomorrow.

slicey - 31 Aug 2021 19:42:21 (#1056 of 2017)

My experience of a secondary progressive is they give you the diagnosis and then tell you they are not sure if it's even a real thing.

Sam and elrick are non stop play fighting. It's totes adorbs. Elrick is the Chad though and can already get Sam's head in his mouth at three months.

Dubris - 31 Aug 2021 18:42:52 (#1057 of 2017)

I hope Eileen isn't going to be experimenting with double denim. It's a strong look but also a high risk one.

binturong - 31 Aug 2021 19:46:57 (#1058 of 2017)

There's a long-running Twitter playoff of 'which minor 70s* footballer looks oldest' using trading cards from the time. It's not world class entertainment, but has mild amusement value. I can't imagine the same could be said of a radio version.

I think scores may now be even for the NZ/Oz mistake, Eileen.

* Might be 80s.

binturong - 31 Aug 2021 19:47:50 (#1059 of 2017)

they give you the diagnosis and then tell you they are not sure if it's even a real thing

That seems less than helpful.

Policywatcher - 31 Aug 2021 19:03:38 (#1060 of 2017)

There's a small museum in Swindon that's well worth avoiding (though the art gallery part has a few halfway decent pics, and there's some neat bits about the area's little known Roman period).

But the Council is planning to close it down in a few months, so make sure you miss it while it's still there.
