A day out in Doncaster

My first holiday post Covid seems to have shifted from a week in Germany, to a week in Ireland, and has now shrunk to a day trip to Doncaster.

To stop me from feeling excessively sorry for myself, tell me about the unmissable attractions of a place I can't recall anyone ever having a good word about. I have a few hours free in the morning, and as the sun sets, an evening of exciting Doncaster nightlife stretches before me.

Quite a good Wetherspoons.

If you are keen on horse racing, you could plan your day trip to coincide with the upcoming St Leger Stakes (Sat 11th Sept).

If you’re into Victorian architecture, it has a truly magnificent church by George Gilbert Scott

A walk in the park at Cusworth Hall.

A decent station bar.

HouseOfLametta - 30 Aug 2021 21:50:00 (#7 of 65)

The grimmest, coldest, most vomit soaked station in Christendom.

I think Doncaster station used to have a Natural New Zealand ice cream outlet, unless that was Barnsley. It was somewhere unexpected in South Yorks, anyway.

Doncaster benefits from excellent transport connections.

And with good reason.

Doncaster. Grimsby. Scunthorpe. Gainsborough. Barnsley.

Which would be the best bet for a day out?

Or which would be the best day out for a bet?

I met someone from Doncaster once. In London. This is my Doncaster story.

About 20 minutes on the train to York.

DesEsseintes - 30 Aug 2021 23:06:16 (#15 of 65)

It's only an hour and a half from London on a fast train.

It's nearer to London than Kent is.

I think D-U might be starting out from London.

HouseOfLametta - 30 Aug 2021 23:13:57 (#17 of 65)

Grimsby and Gainsborough have interesting bits.

You are enticed to fish. Go to Grimsby.

Doncaster is a great place to buy a car.

Jay Rayner liked a fish restaurant there once.

There's a very good soft-play place, but not sure that's in your wheelhouse.

FGBFGB - 30 Aug 2021 23:20:57 (#20 of 65)

Gainsborough was used by George Eliot as the setting for The Mill on the Floss.
