Have you ever been star-struck?

Not just 'met someone famous', but when you actually got a buzz from it.

Standing next to Arthur Lee in a newsagent.

Neil Gaiman replying to a tweet.

An unsolicited DM from Michael Fenton Stevens (hardly a star, but I was a big fan of his when I was a kid, for some reason).

Conversely I sold a bottle of wine to Les Dennis and felt utterly indifferent. Seemed like a nice chap, though.

Getting a generous reply (but ultimately a knock back) after writing to Brian Clough requesting time to interview him. At least he signed it.

Having a fag with Jack Charlton in the Wembley car park.

Jack fucking Charlton.

AdonisBlue - 12 Jan 2022 20:29:57 (#4 of 58)

Is he a footballer? Or maybe cricket? I honestly can never remember.

When I said hello to Nick Cave at Heathrow, and then he came over and started chatting.

I was a very very long way from chilled.

Tadagee - 12 Jan 2022 20:42:13 (#7 of 58)

#5 heh.

I sort of inoculated myself against it, by being star-struck early on meeting lots of folkies who to me were giants, but to normal people were absolute nobodies, because I suppose objectively they were. So when I met some people normal people will have heard of, I'd run out of awe.

AlanII - 12 Jan 2022 20:48:02 (#9 of 58)

Well I'm in awe, pops.

Used to be part of a p.a. hire company that brought me into close contact with some very well known musical artistes and one soon learns to measure how much informality is welcome (or not).

Only ever once experienced any starstruck, up themselves narcissistic vanity rudeness. One Leo Sayer.

(Who?)

The only example of that I ever encountered was the lead singer of The Sultans of Ping. Horrible arrogant prick.

TableTopJoe - 12 Jan 2022 20:52:55 (#12 of 58)

I find that totally believable, phantlers. He's always seemed a total arse.

AdonisBlue - 12 Jan 2022 20:57:52 (#13 of 58)

I was star struck when I met Erin Brockovich (unpleasant) and Rachel Carson (lovely). I've met a few minor indie band singers and they were all surprisingly polite and posh compared to their on stage personas, but pleasant enough. Don't we have one in JTT?

The first time I flew Virgin in Economy to Antigua, Branson sat directly behind me on his way to his Island. I have told this boring story before. But I was distracted and very starstruck by the violinist out of the Cors sat up front on the same flight.

#12: As Myles Jupp said "Small chap, isn't he? Now, I'm not saying he's completely..."

tasselhoff - 12 Jan 2022 20:59:13 (#15 of 58)

Beyonce and Felicity Kendall (following the former after getting off a flight, and sitting next to the latter in the VIP lounge in Heathrow. She got up).

It is doubly satisfying if when spotting a sleb and maintaining some decorum said sleb recognises this and returns a smile.

Roy Wood's manner of engaging with the public provides opportunities to nonchalantly show off:

She wouldn't be well known outside her sphere although she's a star within it, but I was introduced to the flamenco dancer, Eva Yerbabuena, in a bar one evening after a show. I'm not some huge, knowledgeable fan of flamenco but it is the one form of dance/music/song that gets me emotionally like no other. We chatted for about twenty minutes and I was pretty fucking awestruck.

This is what she does -

I chatted for a while to Russell Tovey, then we had sex behind some wheelie bins. Bliss!

YouTube link or it didn't happen.
