Visiting Israel

My mother's dream for many years has been to visit Israel. She has just celebrated her 70th birthday and I am going to take her there at Easter next year.

I visited myself about 20 years ago, so I have some ideas, but I am wondering if anyone with more recent or detailed knowledge can recommend unmissable sights slightly off the beaten track? Also is it worth hiring a car? I quite fancy visiting Mount Hermon. Is it nice?

We want to visit historical sights mainly. We are not interested in modern day politics.

Yeah, I’d like to go - it’s been in the news my entire life so it’d be good to see it with my own eyes.

keep detailed accounts of exactly where you go and when.

Knew somebody back in the 80s who was surprised on the level of detail he was asked for before flying home.

Presume it as least as detailed nowadays.

You could be in for the trip of your life. It's been decades, but here is what I recommend:

1) Try to stay within the old city of Jerusalem for a few days and hire expert guides. There is so much history condensed in that small area it is absolutely astounding. I would make a point to hire, if you can, guides who are knowledgeable in Jewish, Christian and Islamic histories of the area.

2) Take a day trip (assuming it's safe) to Jericho, Herod's castles, and the Mosada. Try to swim in the Dead Sea.

3) Eilat is fantastic.

4) Haifa is my favorite city.

5) Spend a day or two on the Sea of Galilee.

6) Try to stay on a kibbutz for a day or two. I stayed on one for weeks, I'll never forget the experience.

Good luck!

I flew to Israel with easyJet once. The outbound flight was fine, but the flight back was terribly Haifa-Luton.

Fly El Al. You will experience security and screening like you have never seen before.

All part of the experience.
