Have you ever been to Strasbourg?

Capital of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region, close to the German border and home of the European Parliament.

What is it like? What appeal does it hold for the short break visitor?

Just got back from a long weekend.

Nice old town, good museums. Take a boat trip (with two canal locks) and see the European sector.

Food wise, I would avoid the Alsace specialties (with the exception of flammekuche) as it tends to be very fat-based.

I found the best restaurants were in the petite France area.

Definitely worth a visit.

Drove through it once on the way to Switzerland. Stopped in a somewhat vibey service station that sold kebabs.

Never been. But we pick wild mirabelles and make a tart from them - which is a Strasbourg recipe and is delish.

I studied there for a year, although it wasn't the best time of my life.

However... The old city is rather lovely, particularly on the island. Stunning gothic cathedral, too. It's got a character all of its own - part French, part German as you'd expect from its location and history, and a local language to match. The cuisine reflects this, too - a good choucroute is a must! There's also a lot of hunters' food - rabbit stew is spaetzle was a particular favourite. And, of course, flammekueche.

Lots nearby - as well as Colmar and Mulhouse, you have Germany (Baden-Baden, the Black Forest, Freiburg) nearby, as well as Switzerland (Basle) and the lovely Vosges. Plenty cheese and wine to be had in the region.

The modern art museum is rather good, too.

Vegetarian since 1987 and donate to various animal welfare charities. France is a culinary desert as far as I'm concerned. When in doubt - find the nearest Italian restaurant.

Brussels is much the same. 'Mushroom soup' with unexpected ham floating in it. But I tend to travel with very low expectations on the food front when visiting continental Europe.

I use to go to Mulhouse to visit a customer in Switzerland, but never got to Strasbourg.

Not over-keen on Alsatian white wines -(imo) too sweet and, here in the UK, too expensive. You may be seeing more reds now, Pinot Noirs, but again (imo) not good value.

Alsatian wine is delicious too. Try the Sylvaner for a less well known grape that's worth the discovery.

Also worth pointing out that Strasburg is not at all like the rest of Alsace. Strasbourg is cosmopolitan, left wing, pleasant. Alsace is racist and rural.

The best are Zind Humbrecht - and their bargain offers (here in the UK) begin at around £14:

anything lush and complex and you are over £20.

Its not somewhere I shop, but am told Lidl are excellent value for wine.
