Once on an impulse I took the Oslo to Bergen railroad in Norway, one of the most beautiful areas of the earth I have ever seen. Can't wait to do it again.

Palawan, Philippines. Absolutely stunning.

I hate taking cruises, but there is one exception, an Alaskan cruise. Highly recommended.

Chiang Mai, Thailand. A wonderful city.

Kyoto, Japan. Buy the 600 Yen bus pass and jump on and jump off all day long seeing temples and shrines and then find a little restaurant at night where you can drink beer and eat fabulous Japanese food.

Plitvice National Forest in Croatia, stunning.

Kyoto is possibly my favourite place in the world, so I agree. Don't forget to use the Randen trams to get around, too, if you're headed to/from Arashiyama and fancy a rattling ride through people's back gardens.

The island of Bohol, in the Philippines. Chocolate Hills, beaches, rainforest, fireflies and tarsiers. What's not to love?

The Sunderbans, between India and Bangladesh. A muddy, mangrove ridden delta, where you can stay in a village, chug round on a boat, and see an actual live wild tiger. Oh, and crocodiles, water buffalo, all sorts of stuff besides.

Bohemian Switzerland, on the German-Czech border. Impossibly pretty area, much more untamed than its namesake.

The North coast of Zeeland in Denmark. Woods, little coves and fishing villages with amazing fresh catches. Loads of Copenhagners have cabins up here.

Perhaps similarly, the island of Oléron, off the Charentais coast in France. Less posh than its neighbour, the Ile de Ré, but a wonderful place to visit. Great beaches, whether sandy or rock pools, beautiful little towns and markets, loads of good cycling, amazing food. Very busy in August, but rather peaceful the rest of the time.

Great posts Hailes!

Re Switzerland: the Holstein Switzerland (northern Germany) and the Suisse Normande in France are also worth a visit.

That Norwegian railway journey sounds fabulous, it may find a place on my bucket list.

hailesaladdie - 21 Aug 2021 18:17:11 (#16 of 41)

Ironically, I've done that journey... But on the sleeper train. In winter.

It is indeed fabulous, plus you end up in Bergen which is a great place to explore the fjords from.

hailesaladdie - 21 Aug 2021 18:18:39 (#18 of 41)

Don't forget the side journey to Flåm (aka Norway in a Nutshell). Have long wanted to do this. Then when you reach Bergen, you can get a Fjord Escort.

Eligelis - 21 Aug 2021 18:25:58 (#19 of 41)

Have you ever been there when they have had a fjord fiesta then?

hailesaladdie - 21 Aug 2021 18:27:39 (#20 of 41)

No, but I have read the Hurtigruten magazine, Fjord Focus.
