New Report: NHS 'leaking millions' in PFI contracts to private companies

'"This report shows for the first time the huge amount of taxpayers' money which is leaking out of the NHS through the profits generated by PFI companies.'

'"Given the extreme austerity in the NHS, where patients are being denied treatment and waiting times for operations are rising, the government needs to take action to stop this leakage of taxpayer funds out of the NHS."'

A government spokesperson said, blah blah blah blah blah, fuck off you plebs.

machiavelli - 30 Aug 2017 06:16:45 (#2 of 190)

All predicted way back when.

A copper told me of the PFI station he worked from. Once upon a time, if the needed, say, a whiteboard, they would have obtained it for £30 and fitted it themselves. The PFI company charged over a grand for the same thing.

Kerching! suckers.

thisonehasalittlehat - 30 Aug 2017 07:16:38 (#3 of 190)

It's a lot of whiteboards until you've covered the cost of a new police station.

I understood there were two dodgy elements: payment for the overpriced build and dodgy maintenance contracts.

Gotout - 30 Aug 2017 07:32:02 (#5 of 190)

Anybody with half a braincell could have foreseen that PFIs would turn out to be far more expensive than buying outright. It was just a scam dreamed up by a little clique in order to give the illusion of not costing the government as much money in the short term.

col2001 - 30 Aug 2017 07:33:24 (#6 of 190)

As Keynes said, in the long run we're all fucked.

OneOfOne - 30 Aug 2017 07:36:22 (#7 of 190)

Ironic that Blair's 'save the NHS using PFI' is (now it has come to it's gouge-tastic fruition) being used by the tories to prove that 'we can't afford the NHS, so might as well give up, ah well'.

His legacy is the gift that keeps on giving.

Tomnoddy - 30 Aug 2017 07:38:39 (#8 of 190)

More something Brown should be blamed for, and I am a Broon man by and large.

RosyLovelady - 30 Aug 2017 07:39:56 (#9 of 190)

Indeed. PFI was going to remake the NHS in Blair's glamorous image (which is still sometimes said to exert a powerful magnetism on the impressionable).

ThreeFlewOver - 30 Aug 2017 07:42:49 (#10 of 190)

The Department of Health said less than 3% of the NHS budget was spent on PFI.

Yes, but what % of the spend on infrastructure is it?

Nice graphic here:

2% is enough to put hospitals into deficit.

Why the bloody hell should payments come from individual hospitals anyway? They're not individual businesses and they didn't negotiate and agree the dodgy deals.

TinyMcOtter - 30 Aug 2017 09:08:04 (#13 of 190)

PFI should be struck out for unfair terms. In fact I'm pretty sure that I even saw some cross party support for the idea at one point.

TinyMcOtter - 30 Aug 2017 09:14:01 (#14 of 190)

Cancel these crippling PFI hospital contracts and put the ministers who signed them in the dock

From the Mail!

bevernbridge - 30 Aug 2017 16:58:23 (#15 of 190)

I vote for one of the big muddy docks on the banks of the Mersey ...

col2001 - 30 Aug 2017 17:05:32 (#16 of 190)

#14 good lord!

TinyMcOtter - 31 Aug 2017 00:08:37 (#17 of 190)

Indeed. It's enough to drop one's monacle.

Yammoto - 31 Aug 2017 15:05:51 (#18 of 190)

Of course PFI's cost more in the long run. Contractors have to borrow, pay interest and take on board risk. What the Govt gets is budget certainty and capital construction costs spread over decades.

RosyLovelady - 31 Aug 2017 15:13:09 (#19 of 190)

We know, we know.

AlanII - 31 Aug 2017 15:23:56 (#20 of 190)

Along with shit buildings and stuff like that with all the responsibility to pay for the cut corners. Utterly shit ideas, PFIs.
