@JohnHar857

"Cheddar Man" Is a strain on our NHS

phantlers - 07 Feb 2018 12:29:56 (#2 of 289)

They found another one?

xbod72 - 07 Feb 2018 12:32:02 (#3 of 289)

I don't know enough about it but I thought it's just the "original" Cheddar Man but they've only just analysed his DNA?

@Annie_DLV

The raid on our iconic Cheddar Man is right up there with the Spartans plundering the “relics” of their hero Orestes or the Philistines taking the Ark of the Covenant. It’s a standard tactic of war to steal the enemies’ totem gods. If it’s not in The Art of War, it should be.

The Cheddars at Number 42.

<do you ever get that feeling of deja vu?>

I don't understand what's so surprising. Mankind originated in Africa, so the first humans had dark skin to protect them against the sun. Only when they migrated north where the sun is less fierce skins gradually got lighter, but probably not within one generation. Only idiots would think there have always been people of different skin colours, originally there was just one, and that was black.

Light skin may also be due to inter-breeding with Neanderthals.

That's right.

This story about a Spanish specimen analysed in 2014 is worth a read -- similar results, which were surprising at the time (particularly the dark skin/blue eyes combo)

xbod - what is the context for this:

"The raid on our iconic Cheddar Man is right up there with the Spartans plundering the “relics” of their hero Orestes or the Philistines taking the Ark of the Covenant. It’s a standard tactic of war to steal the enemies’ totem gods. If it’s not in The Art of War, it should be."

What raid? Why is should this analysis be in The Art of War? Does the tweeter explain? It looks proper Roger Irrelevant otherwise.

As the article says:

"The discovery shows that the genes for lighter skin became widespread in European populations far later than originally thought."

Frankie, I just put that tweet here as an example of right-wing backlash.

wickeltisch - 07 Feb 2018 12:40:27 (#11 of 289)

Light skin may also be due to inter-breeding with Neanderthals.

But Neanderthals were also descendants of immigrants from further south, so their ancestors were darker skinned as well.

They were ginger, apparently.

"Frankie, I just put it here as an example of right-wing backlash."

Yes, understood, I just didn't know what point the tweeter was trying to make. Why is this an act of war, or whatever? A war against who?

xbod72 - 07 Feb 2018 12:42:58 (#14 of 289)

Culture war, against nationalists and traditionalists.

Dayraven - 07 Feb 2018 12:45:28 (#15 of 289)

They were ginger, apparently.

Though in a way that's genetically distinct from modern ginger hair.

xbod72 - 07 Feb 2018 13:21:00 (#16 of 289)

Heh, they had a guy who still lives in the Cheddar area who shares DNA with Cheddar Man. He's got a really similar nose to the reconstruction but presumably that's more coincidence than a DNA thing?

Jacob_Richter - 07 Feb 2018 13:25:51 (#17 of 289)

Oh no, are the Right being snowflakes over this?

FrankieTeardrop - 07 Feb 2018 13:26:42 (#18 of 289)

They seem to think it means something significant, rather than it being merely quite interesting.

Yammoto - 07 Feb 2018 13:27:48 (#19 of 289)

Heh- Recall years back being absolutely thrashed by CaroleBristol for suggesting that early Brits may not have been white skinned.

The blue eyes are problematical though, must admit I thought the DNAbunnies had traced this to a mutation around 5,000 years ago from central Asia.

FleurDuMal - 07 Feb 2018 13:32:32 (#20 of 289)

Light skin may also be due to inter-breeding with Neanderthals.

Ah, so that's how they created UKIP!
