First they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew...

A thread for people to discuss genuine fears of antisemitism.

This is not a thread for people who think it doesn't exist or doesn't matter.

This is pretty grim

https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europe/austrian-state-may-limit-kosher-meat-sales-to-registered-jews-1.6289229

Jacob_Richter - 18 Jul 2018 20:18:07 (#2 of 5254)

It is - 'registering as Jews'

<shudder>

Tomnoddy - 18 Jul 2018 20:23:03 (#3 of 5254)

The EU wouldn't look very kindly on this, I imagine.

Jacob_Richter - 18 Jul 2018 20:25:05 (#4 of 5254)

Then there's Viktor Orban:

MsCharDonnay - 18 Jul 2018 20:25:07 (#5 of 5254)

Or the international community generally (by which I mean the nice world leaders, not the bastards).

Brunothecat - 18 Jul 2018 20:26:01 (#6 of 5254)

The "first" will come as a surprise to the trade unionists, sick people on social security, persons of colour, moslems, the unemployed, people on starvation wages and a whole host of other people. "They" have been coming for so long that for many "they" have arrived.

darkhorse - 18 Jul 2018 20:37:35 (#7 of 5254)

The original is "First they came for the communists...". Jews are the third group to be come for.

.

A large percentage of the Communists were Jews.

The Nazis saw Communism as a Jewish device - so it made sense to go after the Communists first - two birds with one stone so to speak:

the Communists were also the most organised - particularly in the Trade Unions - so that made even more sense for the Nazis.

Incidentally the Mullahs in Iran at the time of the 1979 Revolution went after the Communists early on because they were well organised and were a potential threat.

A thread for people to discuss genuine fears of antisemitism.

Excellent idea, it will keep all the a/s accusations in one place and any mentions elsewhere can be dismissed as ingenuine.

AlanII - 18 Jul 2018 20:42:19 (#10 of 5254)

Stop being an anti-Semite, dh

Brunothecat - 18 Jul 2018 20:45:07 (#11 of 5254)

There is only one "they" in British politics, the media ratpack. And they will attack whoever their owners tell them to. Maybe the way to deal with the problem is to draw "their" fangs on a permanent basis. Shackle the bully.

darkhorse - 18 Jul 2018 20:51:13 (#12 of 5254)

Oh, I wasn't saying communism and Jews are mutually exclusive.

Just being pedantic about the poem.

AlanII - 18 Jul 2018 20:51:28 (#13 of 5254)

So, anyway. The left have a problem with anti Semitism. Often, anti Zionism drifts into that (though not always). The right on the other hand...

MsCharDonnay - 18 Jul 2018 20:54:23 (#14 of 5254)

If you want to post a lot of whataboutery, why not start your own thread?

Brunothecat - 18 Jul 2018 20:56:58 (#15 of 5254)

The country has a massive problem with racism, xenophobia and nationalist fuckwittery. It would be surreal if it didn't have antisemitism, there are a gang of meatheaded fuckwits out there hating everyone.

AlanII - 18 Jul 2018 20:57:38 (#16 of 5254)

Ok. It's all yours, Chards.

Brunothecat - 18 Jul 2018 20:57:58 (#17 of 5254)

52% of the country are potentially antisemites, according to a recent poll with an above average sample size.

thisonehasalittlehat - 18 Jul 2018 21:00:36 (#18 of 5254)

Hmmmm.

Intowntonight - 18 Jul 2018 21:24:53 (#19 of 5254)

Bruno, where did that figure come from ?

A figure I read some while back was about 17% held generalised anti-Semitic views. In fact the UK had one of the lowest rates in Europe.

Brunothecat - 18 Jul 2018 21:51:06 (#20 of 5254)

Bruno, where did that figure come from ?

52%? Take a guess… Hatred, racism and xenophobia get to that many at least to some extent. I simply don't believe that people prepared to hate their neighbour for being "paki", or black, or gay or whatever else is likely to welcome jews especially if they are dressed for the part. Ignorance doesn't do fine detail.
