More decent discussion from the UK News stalwarts

I went swimming this morning (I swim three times a week, and have done for some years) and - predictably - the pool was fuller than usual, with newbies who have obviously made a resolution. Hopefully, by the end of January it will be back to normal.

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 09:52:14 (#4782 of 4879)

Yes most people give up their resolutions by the second week of Jan. Hopefully that will happen at your pool.

An early Winter break in January is really nice. Done it twice. To the Canaries. It kind of speeds you away from Christmas much faster than any new regime ever can. Prices cheaper too. In fact lots of things are cheaper in Jan. Good time to buy new white goods or stay in a hotel or travel on a train. January can be enjoyed; it should not be endured.

January starts on Boxing Day. It seems like the longest month of the year because that's what it is.

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 09:56:04 (#4784 of 4879)

January is okay. It's February I can't stand. Mercifully short only this year it's 29 days.

FleurDuMal - 06 Jan 2020 09:56:54 (#4785 of 4879)

Bloody Asda had mini chocolate eggs in store yesterday!

Same at our local Coop. And mince pies selling alongside Hot Cross Buns.

I'm hoping Brexit puts a stop to all this nonsense and we go back to having seasonal goods at seasonal times. That means no more strawberries in January! Something very wrong about strawberries in January. Like eating a mince pie at Wimbledon!

xDiggy - 06 Jan 2020 10:18:05 (#4787 of 4879)

After Brexit we'll go back to the early summer months between the exhaustion of the winter store and the new harvest being known as 'the hungry time'. Pensioners in Cleethorpes will say it is all worth it, and claim to have survived it just fine in medieval times.

February is great - the days getting noticeably lighter - snowdrops, crocuses appearing, loads of birdsong, and the birds in their most resplendent plumage. The sense of renewal in the air.

I noticed last night that it wasn't completely dark at 5pm.

HorstVogel - 06 Jan 2020 10:19:21 (#4789 of 4879)

I find February early shoots of spring and tweets coming through in January now.

FrankieTeardrop - 06 Jan 2020 10:20:43 (#4790 of 4879)

We haven't had a cold January day yet, here in Leeds, and the weather looks to stay this way until well past the middle of the month.

HorstVogel - 06 Jan 2020 10:24:27 (#4791 of 4879)

just the slightest of frost, I don't think the night went below -1°C. I sowed some woodruff seeds in dark corner, apparently they need a cold spell to germinated, fingers crossed.

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 10:35:50 (#4792 of 4879)

Haven't had to scrape the car all Winter so far.

FleurDuMal - 06 Jan 2020 10:45:18 (#4793 of 4879)

I’ve done it once.

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 10:58:00 (#4794 of 4879)

In 2018 I had to scrape the car at the end of March! And drive off from packed ice too.

HorstVogel - 06 Jan 2020 11:20:36 (#4795 of 4879)

quite, still plenty of time for some real frosty weather.

Tagyourit - 06 Jan 2020 11:21:04 (#4796 of 4879)

There were a few frosty days in November where I had to scrape the car but nothing since, it's been v mild here in Cambs.

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 12:44:40 (#4797 of 4879)

So mild here in North Staffs some days we barely need the heating on. This is very nice for us as it saves on bills and means it's not too cold but it's ten kinds of wrong. It shouldn't be like this.

I don’t think Leeds has had snow since early February. Off to Taiwan on Wednesday for ten days. Temperatures will be around 20 degrees. They have a presidential election on Saturday

FrankieTeardrop - 06 Jan 2020 14:16:59 (#4799 of 4879)

Teardroplet keeps asking me when it will snow... have fun in Taipei!

Lawlsie - 06 Jan 2020 14:38:47 (#4800 of 4879)

I used to write for a magazine in Taiwan. Never went there but my words did. My words are far more adventurous than their creator.
