More decent discussion from the UK News stalwarts

Would that other companies did likewise.

A firm I worked for did that once. It generated a huge amount of good will. I don't know why firms don't do it more often.

I have started a thread in the Haven asking what people would spend the £300 on

Tagyourit - 08 Jan 2020 15:44:39 (#4823 of 4879)

#4820.

A and B.

A to ensure that B happens.

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 15:47:57 (#4824 of 4879)

Agree Tag.

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 15:49:58 (#4825 of 4879)

If the government gave everyone a £300 bonus - or better yet £500 tax free - it would stimulate the economy. Especially if you had to spend it; say something like time-limited vouchers with your name on so couldn't be swapped.

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 15:50:21 (#4826 of 4879)

Kind of reverse rationing!

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 15:51:13 (#4827 of 4879)

If Johnson has any sense he'll do something like that and call it a Brexit bonus! The government would get a lot of money back in VAT and other taxes too due to more spend in the economy.

FleurDuMal - 08 Jan 2020 15:57:23 (#4828 of 4879)

If Johnson has any sense

Ah. I see a slight flaw in your plan.

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 16:05:46 (#4829 of 4879)

Heh...

It's what they should have done in the 2008 crash. And in a way Darling did do that by slashing VAT. Then Osborne put it up to 20%. He responded to the crash in precisely the wrong way! Now they plan a splurge, or say they do. But how will they pay for it if we're out the EU and don't have trade deals in place?

xDiggy - 08 Jan 2020 16:33:37 (#4830 of 4879)

#4823 - Not (c) then? Cos that's what actually happened!

Lawlsie - 08 Jan 2020 17:45:31 (#4831 of 4879)

I feared as much Diggers!

Eligelis - 08 Jan 2020 21:29:40 (#4832 of 4879)

In the last 5 minutes, I've just discovered that the South Yorkshire Police Operations Complex is situated on Letsby Avenue, in Sheffield.

Mind genuinely blown.

That is deliberate, though:

I’d forgotten Wolverhampton is a city.

FleurDuMal - 09 Jan 2020 08:26:08 (#4835 of 4879)

I’d forgotten Wolverhampton.

FleurDuMal

That's really nice of Greggs. Would that other companies did likewise.

It's nice for the outlet workers, but the factory is pretty unpleasant. I know several people, who've worked there. Many of them are agency staff, as well.

Lawlsie - 09 Jan 2020 09:54:57 (#4837 of 4879)

I've just remembered! My brother in law works for Greggs!

HorstVogel - 09 Jan 2020 11:11:22 (#4838 of 4879)

I’d forgotten Wolverhampton.

same here

Lawlsie - 09 Jan 2020 12:43:14 (#4839 of 4879)

Brother in law will get the bonus! Works nights as a delivery driver for Greggs. Says they're good employers and he works nights from choice.

HerrWalrus - 09 Jan 2020 13:18:50 (#4840 of 4879)

You couldn't make this up!
