Can't they just make Tesco cheaper?

If I was Jack Monroe, I'd sue.

SheikYerbouti - 19 Sep 2018 11:24:18 (#2 of 218)

Named after Jack Ketch, the legendary hangman.

I'd imagine it's more of a spoiler strategy. Take enough custom from the budget market to force competitors away.

Brunothecat - 19 Sep 2018 11:24:50 (#4 of 218)

A nice little reminder of the Shirley Porter connection, what with "jack" being her dad. Still, she's all right whatever might have happened to the socially cleansed.

Only 10 years too late. Well done them!

barkis - 19 Sep 2018 11:48:22 (#6 of 218)

I was also immediately reminded of Shirley Porter.

elderberry - 19 Sep 2018 11:48:51 (#7 of 218)

I do hope they're not planning to use that brand in Ireland

Bribaba - 19 Sep 2018 11:52:39 (#8 of 218)

There are no plans to open a branch in London so they don't count.

Arjuna - 19 Sep 2018 11:52:55 (#9 of 218)

Where I shop there is a lovely little Aldi right next to a ginormous Tesco, so perfect for getting the bulk of your shopping in Aldi then nipping over for odd bits they don't do.

HouseOfLametta - 19 Sep 2018 12:01:10 (#10 of 218)

Doesn't it look shit, though?!

Catspyjamas17 - 19 Sep 2018 12:08:49 (#11 of 218)

The branding people have not read The Graveyard Book, I take it?

Arjuna - 19 Sep 2018 12:10:03 (#12 of 218)

what happened to thae easyjet bloke's shops?

Simonethebeaver - 19 Sep 2018 12:12:06 (#13 of 218)

A family friend knew Jack Cohen when he was setting up Tesco and always claimed she helped him come up with the name. For her 100th birthday, the local Tesco gave her a 'trolley dash'.

Arjuna - 19 Sep 2018 12:12:09 (#14 of 218)

The shops are named after Jack Cohen - Tesco's founder.

HerrWalrus - 19 Sep 2018 12:12:17 (#15 of 218)

He ended up in EasyHotel didn't he?

thisonehasalittlehat - 19 Sep 2018 12:13:22 (#16 of 218)

There's something tremendously mean spirited and cruel about that.

Shop. Only one branch, apparently.

Simonethebeaver - 19 Sep 2018 12:15:41 (#18 of 218)

Well, no, and I phrased it badly. They had a cake and sang Happy Birthday, and she went round in her Popemobile type thing with a couple of her children. She wasn't in financial need of any sort and I think helped herself to some cakes.

thisonehasalittlehat - 19 Sep 2018 12:16:24 (#19 of 218)

Ah!

HouseOfLametta - 19 Sep 2018 12:17:58 (#20 of 218)

Boo!
