Never has the country needed more of his ilk, than now.

Just heard. RIP.

He was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

FleurDuMal - 22 Dec 2018 20:10:09 (#2 of 91)

Sad news. Another proper politician gone.

PostmodernToss - 22 Dec 2018 20:11:05 (#3 of 91)

That’s a great shame. RIP.

Snarlygog - 22 Dec 2018 20:14:28 (#4 of 91)

RIP Paddy, an openly left wing officer in special forces.

xDiggy - 22 Dec 2018 20:16:32 (#5 of 91)

Sad at a time when everything he stood for politically has died too.

YorenInTheNorth - 22 Dec 2018 20:21:58 (#6 of 91)

A great loss. Always straight talking and worth listening too.

RIP

dreams99 - 22 Dec 2018 20:23:39 (#7 of 91)

Internationalist, pro-European, senior administrator during Bosnian war, but in the end an ineffectual domestic politician. And like many lib dems, very vain.

Tagyourit - 22 Dec 2018 20:31:00 (#8 of 91)

Politicians as a breed are very often vain regardless of their affiliation, it takes a degree of self-regard to put oneself up for election.

mikeshadow - 22 Dec 2018 20:34:23 (#9 of 91)

RIP.

The policies of Paddy Ashdown and his successor as leader Charles Kennedy enabled the LibDems to eventually have over 60 seats in Parliament despite FPTP.

Calamity Clegg and co lost that public support.

HerrWalrus - 22 Dec 2018 20:36:09 (#10 of 91)

RIP.

SheikYerbouti - 22 Dec 2018 20:42:31 (#11 of 91)

I'm trying to come up with a variant on Paddy Pantsdown that's appropriate to this sad event.

Snarlygog - 22 Dec 2018 20:44:28 (#12 of 91)

The only politician who's approval rate went up after an affair.

HoHoHoff - 22 Dec 2018 20:46:08 (#13 of 91)

In France it's almost obligatory

saskia - 22 Dec 2018 20:46:41 (#14 of 91)

Sad. RIP.

Anchorman - 22 Dec 2018 20:48:11 (#15 of 91)

Top bloke

RIP

HelenDamnation - 22 Dec 2018 20:50:34 (#16 of 91)

like many lib dems, very vain

You what? In what alternate universe are they any vainer as a breed than Tories or Labour?

lapsedcat - 22 Dec 2018 20:50:52 (#17 of 91)

So sad.

Policywatcher - 22 Dec 2018 20:57:06 (#18 of 91)

Certainly we need more today with his genuine sense of service.

GreenFuture - 22 Dec 2018 20:57:42 (#19 of 91)

Yeah, had his faults like all of us but a good egg all round.

dreams99 - 22 Dec 2018 21:03:02 (#20 of 91)

Ashdown, Owen, cable, all tremendously vain. Maybe it's the vice of the third party, flattering oneself with principle without the taint of compromse in office. Clegg lost that of course, cable less so.
