Danny Baker apologises for ‘racist’ royal baby tweet as he swiftly deletes monkey picture

Danny Baker has apologised for his ‘racist’ tweet about the royal baby, which has since been deleted.

Soon after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave fans the first glimpse at little Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the writer shared a photo on his Twitter account, showing a couple clutching on to a monkey dressed in a suit.

‘Royal baby leaves hospital,’ he wrote alongside the post, shared with 501,000 followers – before swiftly taking it down.

Never knew Danny Baker was one of them.

I mean I knew he was a twat but a racist twat? Who knew?

It's all kicking off on the Twitters.

He was trying to make a point about a posh kid with a wealthy couple. Verdict: Neglectfully racist. His apology was a bit fighty.

I don't think Danny Baker has a racist bone in his body, fwiw.

Thought not. So back to just a common or garden twat then :)

I quite like him: he's one of the best radio broadcasters there is.

I have my suspicions about his sixth left rib, personally.

Tadagee - 09 May 2019 09:34:08 (#8 of 1043)

A mixed race baby as monkey? Yeah that takes boss level stupid, to not realise how that would be interpreted.

I only know him from his tv persona in the 1990s. Based on his many appearances on TFI he was definitely twattsih.

Admittedly not seeing his stupid, 'perma-pleased with himself' face might make it easier to put up with him.

Best to base your judgements on things you remember from 25 years ago.

He has always swung between funny, meh and annoying for me. Uneven. I don't think he is a racist but it doesn't entirely surprise me that he would tweet without engaging his brain.

thePiMan - 09 May 2019 09:39:12 (#12 of 1043)

You're all overlooking the most important issue here. What he tweeted was a chimpanzee, not a monkey.

Here's the thing. I simply wouldn't equate a black person (or indeed a person with 25% black grandparents) with an ape. It wouldn't occur to me that this is a thing people would do, either. The fact this gag was misinterpreted by other people is their fault, not the person making it without any racist intent at all.

solomongursky - 09 May 2019 09:40:44 (#14 of 1043)

You could make fifteen monkeys out of that woman's coat.

"Remember"?!

Yeah, possibly my 'twat' was a little harsh but deffo annoying.

I think you'll find it's the other way round, solomon.

Sorry, you're unaware that a common racist trope is to photoshop pictures/faces of monkeys etc over black people?

Catspyjamas17 - 09 May 2019 09:43:47 (#18 of 1043)

Shush, Tadagee.

A middle class white man has spoken and declared it not racist, therefore it can't be.

You have to be pretty naive to claim this. You of course do know racists associate monkeys with black people and have done in memes. online rants, football terraces etc

Hang on. Every person on the Twitters isn't aware of the intent behind Danny Baker's tweets?
