Iceland vans burnt out in Southmead

Disturbances broke out in the Southmead area of Bristol at around 9.30pm on Monday night after the Prime Minister’s address to the nation in which he announced a 'lockdown' and tougher measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Yeah social unrest worries me, but st least most people (Inc police) don't have guns.

I saw that ambulances had been targeted too - what is it that makes people want to destoy/vandalise the most useful thing?

Southmead is Mos Eisley space port. It had, or has, pubs called The Standard of England and The Bulldog.

Idiots gonna idiot. You always seem to get people who attack emergency services. I have no idea what goes on in their heads.

There is also a Bear And Ragged Staff in Southmead. Never struck me as a welcoming image.

That’s the badge of the Duke of Warwick. What’s the connection?

The answer is 'nothing'.

Yersinia - 25 Mar 2020 08:43:41 (#9 of 48)

'nothing' is probably what goes on in the heads of those who ignore restrictions for their own enjoyment. I'd say what goes on in the heads of the vandals is more actively malevolent.

In America, some youths apparently filmed themselves coughing on food in supermarkets -- and then posted the footage on 'social media'.

This worries me much more than the pandemic itself. We know roughly what will happen with that. We don't know how stupid people will react to months of, effectively, curfew with no cinema, sport etc and, eventually, the threat of completed episodes of Eastenders running out.

With regard to attacking emergency services, I remember reading a newspaper article c1975 about American gangs who set fire to stuff just so's they could see fire engines arrive and pelt stones at the firemen. It seemed like a report from another planet then ...

Iirc Southmead was very much one if those no go areas for us Bristol university students back in the day. I mean St Paul's was edgy and cool, fairly central, Jamaican community and carnival.

Southmead, outer suburbs, "hideously" white, burned out cars and teenagers who might bully you.

In the town I grew up in they had to stop Santa's sleigh (Rotary club version) going around the council estate cos kids attacked it.

#11 - common enough in Lanarkshire in the 70s.

Agree that Southmead was off limits for students.

But when I was there, so was Bedminster which is now apparently hipster central.

Ambulances had tyres slashed in Margate, too, and a delivery van burned in Weston super Mare. Do emergency poets include wheeling and shooting?

FGBFGB - 25 Mar 2020 18:43:32 (#17 of 48)

Powers, though I quite like the idea of emergency poets, so long as I don't have to listen to or read them.

HouseOfLametta - 25 Mar 2020 18:46:24 (#18 of 48)

Bemme not really hipster, it's been up and coming since before I lived there, and seems to have sunk back a bit.

It is by no means the dystopian shithole it was thirty years ago, though.

crabbyoldbat - 25 Mar 2020 18:51:28 (#19 of 48)

#17 there already is an emergency poet, with ties to JtT:
