Somebody should buy a load of sand and build inland beaches.

hailesaladdie - 24 Jun 2020 20:16:30 (#2 of 40)

They do that in Milton Keynes every year.

solomongursky - 24 Jun 2020 20:17:12 (#3 of 40)

Used to do it by The Thames in the 50s I think.

'46, the Windmill Girls pop down:

Interesting. It seems that the newer 'holiday in your own country' sense is a specifically British thing:

hailesaladdie - 24 Jun 2020 21:18:23 (#6 of 40)

I'd only every heard of it as meaning "holiday in your own house" until a few years ago.

xDiggy - 24 Jun 2020 21:20:55 (#7 of 40)

I will be visiting my brother, who lives 400 yds from the largest beach in England. It's uncomfortable as fuck and suicidal to swim from, but needs must.

Catspyjamas17 - 24 Jun 2020 21:22:42 (#8 of 40)

Going on holiday in your own country is just called "a holiday". A staycation to me is staying at home and doing day trips and so on.

#9

That link has introduced me to the term 'holistay'.

SinnerBoy - 24 Jun 2020 21:34:55 (#10 of 40)

It should have a British name, as we don't go on "vacation."

Stoliday?

johnarrgh - 24 Jun 2020 21:36:15 (#11 of 40)

Holistays

Walsgrave - 24 Jun 2020 21:37:23 (#12 of 40)

Is a stoliday a day spent drinking vodka in your pants?

hailesaladdie - 24 Jun 2020 21:38:53 (#13 of 40)

> Stoliday?

A stolid holiday sounds very British.

AdonisBlue - 24 Jun 2020 21:41:04 (#14 of 40)

We've holidayed in the UK for the last decade. My younger daughter has never even flown on a plane. Last November we decided that in 2020 we'd go on the holiday of a lifetime to BC Canada.

Well that was another shit decision I made in a lifetime of them.

mingmong - 24 Jun 2020 22:17:23 (#15 of 40)

Stoliday is brilliant.

Grey skies, a cramped caravan and gritted teeth. All there in those three syllables

carterbrandon - 24 Jun 2020 22:52:13 (#16 of 40)

Eating a cheese sandwich while looking out to sea, as the wipers try to clear the windscreen.

Shadrack22 - 24 Jun 2020 23:03:40 (#17 of 40)

My idea of fun.

Sunfish - 24 Jun 2020 23:15:52 (#18 of 40)

Is Lipsi all off?

bossab2 - 25 Jun 2020 08:15:01 (#19 of 40)

I prefer

Stoicdays

mancurse - 25 Jun 2020 10:36:38 (#20 of 40)

But stoicday doesn't sound as much like 'holiday' as stoliday does.
