Glastonbury: the final curtain

“We have to run next year, otherwise we would seriously go bankrupt … It has to happen for us, we have to carry on. Otherwise it will be curtains. I don’t think we could wait another year.”

The only thing it'll ever be remembered for is oh Jeremy Corbyn, I imagine.

AlanII - 25 Jun 2020 19:34:28 (#2 of 128)

It could always go back to its roots.

moto748 - 25 Jun 2020 19:35:15 (#3 of 128)

Not really.

phantlers - 25 Jun 2020 19:41:21 (#4 of 128)

It has become a monstrous parody of its origins and would benefit from starting again from scratch, as Alan says.

Tylenol - 25 Jun 2020 19:42:31 (#5 of 128)

Yep, it's also always been a shitty site for a festival, no road access and flood prone.

SaffronSunrise - 25 Jun 2020 19:46:02 (#6 of 128)

It's disappointing not to be able to see how shite McCartney was likely to be?

AlanII - 25 Jun 2020 19:46:54 (#7 of 128)

I always preferred Stonehenge, moto.

Better Acid

We have to run next year, otherwise we would seriously go bankrupt

Does it say in the article why?

I get there’s a massive expense in putting the thing on, but it has to be profitable or it would’ve tanked years ago.

So what’s the massive expense that’s crippling them from not putting on a festival?

I don’t get it. I’m not hosting any major festivals this year either. Should I fear bankruptcy?!

moto748 - 25 Jun 2020 20:06:25 (#10 of 128)

Stonehenge was full of pricks, as I recall. And the polis they attracted, I wouldn't romanticise that too much. Pilton was a decent site for small-scale affair like it was at first. But you couldn't go back to that now.

AlanII - 25 Jun 2020 20:10:22 (#11 of 128)

That was later. The Police would walk round in Dixon of Dock Green style when I first went. Agree that the smaller ones were even better though.

Nothing legal can be anything other than an abomination now I suppose - which is why the illegal continues to flourish.

I was the honorary stage manager in 1979 after we built the first big turbosound system in Nottingham and ran it up for the first time the day before we packed the truck.

No biggie, overseeing the changeovers and miking up, getting back line gear on and off as performers, er, performed.

Moments of glory were getting the generator back going after The Only Ones and the lighting crew conspired to trip an overload on their brightly lit opening power chord, sneaking our 'house' band ontage first on the opening Friday (a couple of guys from the workshop/factory were in a band so their gear went on the back of the truck) and an enormous reefer rolled to use the last of our communal hash after breaking it all down and packing it away.

That is my Glastonbury story.

and did we even get paid? Certainly nothing extra and Eavis hated me for comandeering one of his artistes' bespoke caravans for out HQ.

moto748 - 25 Jun 2020 20:24:18 (#14 of 128)

I remember the Only Ones year. Well, not much of it, actually.

I'll have to find another festival to airily not attend this year.

They could have a festival of dairy farming. Come and squeeze an udder!

#13 What an excellent memory, phantlers. Of our time and pure gold.

I was thinking of Smugfest* this year.

*aka Latitude

FrankieTeardrop - 26 Jun 2020 09:10:48 (#20 of 128)

I was hoping to play a few festivals this year <sob>
