One long view perspective is that this by far the most success our species has had in handling a major pandemic.

Well done everyone.

Natascha - 30 Aug 2020 12:52:11 (#2 of 4257)

Yes. And we have actually learnt a lot of science from it.

I came to post this: https://www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3223

Rigid safe distancing rules are an oversimplification based on outdated science and experiences of past viruses, argue Nicholas R Jones and colleagues

Tenesmus - 30 Aug 2020 12:58:13 (#3 of 4257)

Interesting, although there's a glaring problem with

Instead of single, fixed physical distance rules, we propose graded recommendations that better reflect the multiple factors that combine to determine risk.

Mods: please to be changing the V to VII in the header, ta.

Natascha - 30 Aug 2020 13:02:28 (#5 of 4257)

I have seen the graded risks table posted by Trish on twitter; it does seem quite clear.

Is it clear to people wearing masks under their nose, walking straight up to you, cramming into houses for parties?

Natascha - 30 Aug 2020 13:06:38 (#7 of 4257)

Do you mean 'is it clear, if read by ... ?'?

Because the problem with the people you have described is that they don't look for or read this sort of thing in the first place, I imagine, and remaining very aware that this is a sweeping statement condemning a huge group of people with no evidence whatsoever.

I’m just wondering how long until we get up to XIX, myself.

Stellata - 30 Aug 2020 13:22:51 (#9 of 4257)

We seem to be going backwards.

TauCeti - 30 Aug 2020 13:25:32 (#10 of 4257)

One step forward, to backwards....

France has seen a SURGE in cases, as the Daily Express or Tvor might put it. Does anyone know in what settings most transmissions have occurred there?

American Twitter thread (linked to NYT article) starts

NEW: All these months into the pandemic, we may have been testing the wrong way. Data from some state labs suggest up to 90% (!!) of people who get a positive result are no longer contagious and don’t need to isolate.

It's getting more and more suspicious all this debacle.

Tenesmus - 30 Aug 2020 15:55:48 (#15 of 4257)

Police have criticised people's "irresponsible" actions attending an unlicensed rave involving thousands of people in a rural village.

South Wales Police said it had been called to the illegal event at Banwen on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

No matter how well organised you are there are contingencies.

Anecdata from the previous thread backed up by independent shops reporting an uptick in business in the suburbs since March 2020.

SharkPatoo - 30 Aug 2020 19:12:26 (#20 of 4257)

There are currently 11 (eleven) mahoosive cruise ships moored off the Dorset/Devon coast: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-2.4/centery:50.6/zoom:10

I can't see cruising being a viable business after Covid, everyone was gettings sick with food poisoning as it was.
