Fears as ONE QUARTER of Brits say UK has “legitimate territorial claim” to other European countries

An incredible QUARTER of Brits think that the UK has a claim to territory held by other European countries, with the Irish Free State being the most cited. Poles will be looking nervously westward as 30% of Germans want Silesia, Pomerania and East Prussia back, and a whopping TWO THIRDS of Hungarians hanker for the glory days when the Dual Monarchy ruled from Innsbruck to Istanbul.

And then there is Albania.

tasselhoff - 24 Sep 2020 23:16:09 (#2 of 35)

We should take back l'Aquitaine.

DesEsseintes - 24 Sep 2020 23:25:22 (#3 of 35)

CB Fry was offered the throne of Albania.

He sensibly said he couldn't possibly.

And let's not forget the inherently sexist loss of Hanover due to Salic law. I think an apology and a return of the Queen's ancestral lands is only just.

I am surprised Spain is only 37%, I thought they all wanted Gibraltar back..

darkhorse - 25 Sep 2020 07:49:48 (#6 of 35)

Even if the UK branch of Hanover had kept it in Victorian times, wouldn’t they have lost it in the early 20th century anyway

So which bits of Forrin are Blighty's loopy nationalists eyeing up?

FGBFGB - 25 Sep 2020 07:53:34 (#8 of 35)

Calais, Normandy, Aquitaine, the Ionian Islands, Heligoland.

barkis - 25 Sep 2020 07:54:52 (#9 of 35)

The 13 colonies.

Arjuna - 25 Sep 2020 07:56:49 (#10 of 35)

It says neighbouring countries, not many of them.

Arjuna - 25 Sep 2020 07:57:28 (#11 of 35)

Britain is actually low on the list, only Sweden below us.

SatelliteOne - 25 Sep 2020 07:58:48 (#12 of 35)

To be honest, I suspect that a sizeable percentage of Brexiteers would be more than happy for the UK to go to war with the EU, full on planes bombing, armies fighting on battlefields war.

Just so long as it's not them what's doing the actual fighting and dieing.

ChankNolen - 25 Sep 2020 08:46:57 (#13 of 35)

'only Sweden below us'

My Swedish colleague thinks Aaland 'probably' should belong to Sweden.

And as the islands are close to 100% Swedish-speaking, you can kind of see his point.

SharkPatoo - 25 Sep 2020 08:48:06 (#14 of 35)

If we can get that top bit of France back it's cheap booze all round.

Arjuna - 25 Sep 2020 08:50:06 (#15 of 35)

TommyDGNR8 - 25 Sep 2020 09:05:00 (#18 of 35)

Was there ever an autopsy to confirm Bloody Mary had Calais written on her heart?

Verdigris - 25 Sep 2020 09:26:43 (#19 of 35)

Doggerland will provide plenty parking for the al fresco beastliness community.

InternationalVicar - 25 Sep 2020 09:28:17 (#20 of 35)

with the Irish Free State being the most cited.
