the CND gig?

Yeah, Hazel O'Connor played, and Madness. John Peel had to go to hospital cos the punks threw mud at him.

#13 I had completely forgotten that song and that band. Both were not really worth remembering though.

How come Ms Dodds has got a German Christian name?

At one time Scottish parents used to try and choose neutral noncatholic nonprotestant names, I think.

I don't know whether that was the case in her case though.

Perhaps she had a German mother.

Just occurred to me - she was born in Aberdeen, Yvette Cooper was born in Inverness, that was all.

1MELSM - 21 Nov 2020 10:11:51 (#17 of 33)

Never mind Dodds, why was Cooper named after a Mini car?

(she'd have insisted on not mentioning the 'S' word)

Sunfish - 21 Nov 2020 10:32:32 (#18 of 33)

Dodds is dreadful. She won’t be there for long.

mingmong - 21 Nov 2020 12:34:51 (#19 of 33)

McDonald was better. Not only was he a natty dresser, but throwing the Red Book at Osborne showed a promising instinct for raising political trolling to the dimension of performance art

Shadrack22 - 21 Nov 2020 12:38:43 (#20 of 33)

She won’t be there for long.

Reeves will probably replace her in the next reshuffle.

Sunfish - 21 Nov 2020 12:46:02 (#21 of 33)

McDonald was better.

Ronald? Agreed.

mingmong - 21 Nov 2020 12:49:11 (#22 of 33)

Not a fan then, Sunners?

I liked the description of his serious, empathetic mode: "like a kindly uncle, reminising about much-loved recently-deceased family dog"

Sunfish - 21 Nov 2020 12:52:34 (#23 of 33)

No, he was alright Ming. I liked the telly interviews he gave from his home. Wide shots of a comfortable sofa (settee?), a tiled fireplace, Laura Ashley blinds. Bit of a dark player behind the scenes, the avuncular lefty grandad before the camera.

breakfast - 21 Nov 2020 13:14:16 (#24 of 33)

He was called McDonnell though.

mingmong - 21 Nov 2020 13:16:13 (#25 of 33)

oh yeah.

Anneliese Jane Dodds (born 16 March 1978)

God, politicians are getting younger these days.

breakfast - 21 Nov 2020 13:19:31 (#27 of 33)

They all used to be a lot older than me.

mingmong - 21 Nov 2020 13:29:20 (#28 of 33)

Its impossible to seperate that fact (IMO) from the impression that politicians are all getting more light-weight look as though they're making it up as they are going along

No doubt politicians like Dennis Healy and Lord Carrington actually were, in some objective way, more substantial and serious people than say Ed Milliband or Dominic Raab. But did they necessarily seem that way at the time, or were unfavourable comparisons made (by the equivalents of me and breakfast) with the likes of Stafford Cripps or Derick Heathcoat-Amory?

Shadrack22 - 21 Nov 2020 13:31:51 (#29 of 33)

Only Tangent will know and he is far, far away.

mingmong - 21 Nov 2020 13:33:40 (#30 of 33)

I wonder if he has some kind of metaphysical weighing device in his study, by which he can evaluate the relative significance of say Priti Patel vs Cecil Parkinson

Shadrack22 - 21 Nov 2020 13:50:01 (#31 of 33)

I’m sure he does.

Patel contributed to Britannia Unchained, so presumably there is a thought out ideological framework there, however flawed and objectionable. I’m not aware of Parkinson having pondered much. My memory is that he was regarded as a lightweight back in the 1980s.

Sunfish - 21 Nov 2020 13:55:17 (#32 of 33)

“if I goose this secretary will I get away with it?”

guigal - 22 Nov 2020 00:35:41 (#33 of 33)

the impression that politicians are all getting more light-weight

It's a Darwinian adaptation to the demands of the electorate. Trump showed the way.
