This is the NEW weather thread from 2021 onwards

TommyDGNR8 - 11 Jan 2021 10:50:04 (#2 of 112)

It's pissing down.

ArriveAlive - 11 Jan 2021 11:20:16 (#3 of 112)

Having been spurred to open my office blinds, I can report that it's now grey out there.

ReverendBlueJeans - 11 Jan 2021 11:32:38 (#4 of 112)

Bucketing most of the morning.

Dull with showers yesterday. We went out for a walk and even after 12 hours of above-zero temperatures and lots of rain, there was still loads of frost in the ground.

All gone now.

bossab2 - 11 Jan 2021 11:35:09 (#5 of 112)

Warmer and grey here.

Verdigris - 11 Jan 2021 11:57:48 (#6 of 112)

Verging on sunny.

tasselhoff - 11 Jan 2021 12:01:04 (#7 of 112)

I had to take my wife's car to the garage this morning when it was -7. With summer tyres. Which was scary.

Only -3 now.

TommyDGNR8 - 11 Jan 2021 12:12:55 (#8 of 112)

Do people in this country actually change tyres in winter/summer? I don't think I've ever encountered more than one or two who even talk about it.

phantlers - 11 Jan 2021 12:17:34 (#9 of 112)

It is definitely a thing. The radio station piped in at work carries a regular advertisement for such a service, which includes storage of off season tyres.

Looks mild out there for January but the forecast animation shows a stream of rain over north Wales for most of the next 24 hours.

TauCeti - 11 Jan 2021 12:25:09 (#10 of 112)

Wind picked up considerably in gusts and swooshes accompanied by a spatter of thicker drizzle. not cold.

ReverendBlueJeans - 11 Jan 2021 13:23:01 (#11 of 112)

Tass is in France, yes?

Thing is, who's prepared to change their tyres and then change them back again once freezing conditions have scarpered, perhaps just days later?

phantlers - 11 Jan 2021 13:28:24 (#12 of 112)

All part of the service sir.

TommyDGNR8 - 11 Jan 2021 13:32:07 (#13 of 112)

That's it, though, isn't it? We get so little extreme weather that it's not worth being prepared for it. That's why the place grinds to a halt when we get a proper cold snap.

10smith - 11 Jan 2021 13:56:36 (#14 of 112)

Thank you, boss. Back to instantaneous loading.

bossab2 - 11 Jan 2021 13:57:40 (#15 of 112)

No problem. Much to my surprise all the resources links still work !

10smith - 11 Jan 2021 14:02:40 (#16 of 112)

Tommy has nailed it. Short of trying to melt your way out of it with gritters, which is only good for a couple of cms, the safe choices are winter tyres or staying off the roads. But a pain to have to switch twice a year. Even all seasons don't hack it in heavy snow (4-6 inches plus).

10smith - 11 Jan 2021 14:03:26 (#17 of 112)

One contrail just under a 25,000 broken cloud deck.

TauCeti - 11 Jan 2021 14:22:29 (#18 of 112)

Windy but bright - clouds racing from W occasionally a brighter spot of yellow peeps through. Fresh.

bossab2 - 11 Jan 2021 15:48:11 (#19 of 112)

Mild, mild, mild here.

tasselhoff - 11 Jan 2021 16:58:00 (#20 of 112)

Winter tyres don't just help with snow, they're more effective at 7 degrees or below.
