The Last Night of the Proms!

An ocean of unnion jacks, but some resistance in the form of little EU berets and flags!

There used to be flag diversity! Did they bus them in?

Burlesque extraordinaire!

The Proms is not suppose to be an expression of national exceptionalism.

It never was though dear.

The Proms is a festival of classical music and performers, conductors and fans come from around the world. It is embarrassing for classical music fans here for the festival to be concluded by rowdy songs written during the imperial era.

Bach's St Mathew's Passion, performed in German, was a treat.

You don't have to watch the Hope and Glory bit if you don't want.

Should rewrite it as Land of Hopeless Tories.

I worked for a firm which was a corporate sponsor of the RAH. Employees were always making use of the benefits - anyone could get a box at a reasonable rate. Last Night was one of those events, however, where people didn't bother. Too embarrassing.

The rest of the proms were popular though.

There were a few tricolours in there I could see on the telly. Mostly it was union jacks though - not as many tourists about possibly.

I'd have channel-hopped on to it last night but like Match of the Day, whatever drama series was on Channel 4 or BBC4, or a film on whichever of the channels, none of those options even entered into our consideration so determined were we to watch the US Open Final on Amazon Prime Video and made available to Channel 4. That was exhilarating just to watch from afar, with feel-good qualities at the something-special-happening nature of what millions of people must have been viewing or listening to.

On Amazon Prime video made available to Channel 4? Did you enjoy the ads?

Commentators are now predicting the teenage winner's income earning future, $150 billion.

I suppose it distracts viewers from Afghanistan and losing the war.

There weren't any ads on Channel 4 for the duration of the match, and possibly not in the build-up or post match coverage either. Channel 4 simply took the 'live' broadcast from Amazon Prime Video.

It was a wonderful distraction from any number of things good, bad or indifferent, for many millions of people across the world who watched it. And there must have been many more who wished they could have watched and been impressed by the quality of play and sheer drama of it all, in front of a crowd hostile to Emma Raducanu but which did not distract the victor.
