"We'll have to take you in," said one of the policemen, "this is very bizarre."

'Unless Bill hallucinated the entire incident, it’s possible he went into the future through a timeslip, to a time period when Britain had become, through rampant global warming, some tropical republic.'

He made his way back to Birkenhead and spent over a tenner on ale in several pubs

How much beer could you buy for £10 in 1975? It must have been a fair amount.

NightInTGeorgia - 19 Sep 2021 21:13:53 (#4 of 13)

A tenner was 8 pints and a haggis supper in 1986

Tomnoddy - 19 Sep 2021 21:18:03 (#5 of 13)

Beer was about 65-70p a pint around then I think. Terrible inflation, harking back to the halcyon days of 50p a pint when I started legal drinking in 1971.

Delighted_User - 19 Sep 2021 22:27:27 (#6 of 13)

Where was this? When I started drinking in English pubs in 1978, 40p was noticeably premium, compared to a standard of 36p or so. I'd have thought 1971 was barely decimal.

Tomnoddy - 19 Sep 2021 23:25:52 (#7 of 13)

Looks as if I'm wrong. 197p it was 2s 2.5d apparently, in 1972 it was 13p.

Maybe that's why my minuscule grant lasted so well?

All I know is that Ford Prefect ordered 9 pints and the barman was still incredulous that he was allowed to keep the change from a fiver.

These days I'm incredulous if I buy one pint and get much change from a fiver.

Yeah, the second is definitely more likely than the ramblings of a chronic pisshead retold after 37 years.

Bullshit, or not?

As well-researched as that documentary is, I feel it underplays the role Biggie Smalls had in building the Pyramids.

"Clive, that's the plot from Life on Mars. now what have you really been doing?"

Merseyside press has some fantastic scoops. The latest one is a doll hidden in a wall saying it murdered the previous occupants of the house this guy had just moved into
