BREAKING: Carole Cadwalladr wins libel case against Arron Banks
solomongursky - 13 Jun 2022 09:32:46 (#1 of 171)

I won the only thing that mattered Brexit !

ReverendBlueJeans - 13 Jun 2022 10:34:27 (#2 of 171)

What a jobbie.

ReverendBlueJeans - 13 Jun 2022 10:35:18 (#3 of 171)

By which I mean the Banks tick, not you or CC, Sol.

GreenFuture - 13 Jun 2022 10:37:20 (#4 of 171)

Excellent news.

So pleased.

Remains to be seen if any beyond liberal and independent media credit their audience to spell out the known facts - that masterminds of Brexit were varying degrees of Russian asset.

Arjuna - 13 Jun 2022 10:38:17 (#5 of 171)

This is very good news

solomongursky - 13 Jun 2022 09:39:11 (#6 of 171)

masterminds of Brexit were varying degrees of Russian asset.

Naturally. Shady spivs, chancers, grasping MPs and wide boys took Russian cash to help inflict disaster on GB.

moto748 - 13 Jun 2022 10:06:36 (#7 of 171)

And followed it up with a large dose of flag-shsgging, to show how patriotic they are.

The worthless shitheads.

A sad day indeed for Arron 'Prison Face' Banks.

Mazzarin - 13 Jun 2022 11:21:49 (#9 of 171)

The copium of the Brexiteers is amazing.

Guido is running with "he won the case but was awarded no damages".

OldLefty - 13 Jun 2022 11:26:15 (#10 of 171)

The twat will probably appeal to keep it going as long as he can.

Lawlsie - 13 Jun 2022 11:31:01 (#11 of 171)

Yup! The process is the punishment. He can afford to lose. It was never about winning; it was about punishing Cadwalladr

upgoerfive - 13 Jun 2022 11:47:44 (#12 of 171)

And discouraging others who would shine a light on the murky business.

Lawlsie - 13 Jun 2022 11:49:08 (#13 of 171)

Yes that too. Absolutely.

darkhorse - 13 Jun 2022 11:51:02 (#14 of 171)

So reading the actual summary judgement, I understand that she hasn’t actually proved whatever it is she said about him.

I am not sure of the specific defamatory allegation anyways but I assume it is set out on the judgment.

The judge also seems to say something about a less serious, but still defamatory, meaning that Cadwallr intended. So the statements didn’t bear the more serious defamatory meaning that Banks’ lawyers alleged.

But the judge agreed there was a public interest defence of publication anyway. So Banks doesn’t win his case.

Is that about it ?

Mazzarin - 13 Jun 2022 11:55:05 (#15 of 171)

Basically yes.

The court ruled the TED Talk was defamatory and caused serious harm, meeting the criteria to find in his favour, but it also accepted her "public interest defence" in making the claim. That trumped his claim thus the case was dismissed.

It is well-known that Banks is an admirer of Putin, and the way that interfering journalists are 'dealt with' by the Kremlin:

“@carolecadwalla wouldn’t be so lippy in Russia!”

barkis - 13 Jun 2022 12:01:53 (#17 of 171)

The judge said that what she wrote would reasonably be interpreted as meaning something she said she didn't intend, so she dropped her defence on grounds of truth and fell back on public interest.

I won the only thing that mattered Brexit !

He really is a charmless nerk, isn't he?

ReverendBlueJeans - 13 Jun 2022 12:33:27 (#19 of 171)

CC has won loads of awards for her work.

Banks is a rich git who thinks he can do whatever he likes.

Arjuna - 13 Jun 2022 12:46:21 (#20 of 171)

And is generally right in that assumption
