Mask wearing does not have science behind it

Mask wearing does not have science behind it.

It seems that all in US is hanging in with US people pushing for masks, when it is one of the least effective things you can do.

You can be much more effective with social distancing and working from home and what ever way you can keep social distancing.

Well yes, but that doesn’t mean that masks are ineffective though.

tasselhoff - 04 Jul 2020 21:48:33 (#4 of 411)

Social distancing indoors is way less effective than mask-wearing.

cozzer - 04 Jul 2020 22:02:35 (#5 of 411)

It depends what you mean.

Latest case on my island is a child whose mother apparently picked it up in Arizona or on her way home from Arizona.

I guess they weren't wearing masks at home.

At the same time, Michael Osterholm, a public health and disease expert who is worried that mask effectiveness is being over-hyped, has also found himself threatened and harassed. Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told me he’s received vulgar emails from people who read his statements questioning the efficacy of cloth masks. Osterholm said that his position was not that masks shouldn’t be worn — he wears one in public, himself — but that there is limited data on how effective DIY cloth masks are at stopping small particles, either from passing through or being forced out the sides of the mask. Without that information, he said, physical distancing and isolation remain the most important tools in stopping the spread of the coronavirus. But as more Republicans say the worst of the coronavirus is behind us, and usage of masks tracks tightly along the partisan spectrum, Osterholm told me he felt like well-meaning people were making him out to be a pandemic denialist.

the worst of the coronavirus is behind us

Tell that to the thousands that will die in the coming weeks.

Worst is behind of some countries that never had mask wearing even as suggested from government. Some others that have it required are doing much worse right now, because they opened up too early.

Masks do not correct that error.

What drugs are you taking, IQ?

IQ76again - 05 Jul 2020 04:35:07 (#11 of 411)

Just ethanol.

We really had not masks even suggested by government and pandemia seems to be in control without it, but US and other countries seems to have it worse.

Garden - 05 Jul 2020 05:29:41 (#12 of 411)

I'd quit the ethanol if I were you.

IQ76again - 05 Jul 2020 05:35:34 (#13 of 411)

I'd quit the ethanol if I were you.

You are absolutely right and I should do it.

You also should stop trusting that masks are the answer for Covid, because they really are not.

Infections dropped in the Czech Republic after masks were made mandatory. They're not by any means an absolute defence but do inhibit large droplet spread onto other people and surfaces.

It is from David76 (US), back in early 2000 and from original Guardian talkboard, but I really don't care what you think really.

Infections dropped in the Czech Republic after masks were made mandatory. They're not by any means an absolute defence but do inhibit large droplet spread onto other people and surfaces.

Infections dropped in Finland too near zero and without any mandatory masks (and people really do not wear those at all), so why you had so many less infections or were they caused by some other measures and not by masks?

fogsake - 05 Jul 2020 08:49:28 (#17 of 411)

Geography and lifestyle play an obvious part in these things. It's ridiculous to compare some situations.

IQ76again - 05 Jul 2020 08:52:14 (#18 of 411)

Geography and lifestyle play a part in these things.

And you are absolutely correct with it. Social distancing is everyday life in Finland even without Covid.

flossiefoe - 05 Jul 2020 08:55:57 (#19 of 411)

I don’t think anybody is suggesting that mask wearing is a panacea, but more or less all of us are forced into situations - grocery shopping is the obvious one - where social distancing is difficult if not impossible to apply. Wearing a mask in these situations may well be better than not wearing one. I’m not aware of any scientific study that suggests otherwise.

Grocery shopping is harder now, but atleast I can pass other shoppers 1 meters way (and it needs some waiting at some point to wait others to move away from products you want) and washing hands before entering the store and washing again when you get home and not touching your face when you are doing shopping and it works .

And you cannot go to grocery store at all when you feel sick that is most important thing.
