FEAR OF DICTATORSHIP?

After the riots & rampant pandemic here, political unrest & Trump now taking sorting machines from post offices & such to make mail in voting harder, am I insane to ponder we may be looking at the possibility of a dictatorship? I never dreamed I’d ask this, but when the media can’t be trusted, so many people being fired from within his administration who are publishing books on how corrupt they feel he is.

i just want to hear what news media around the world feels is about to happen here.

I get the impression that the US is going to pull back from the brink this time round but, things could certainly start getting very interesting come November. I'm a little worried that my impression is just5 wishful thinking if I'm honest. The rest of the western world (barring the same kind of demographics, principally in England but elsewhere in smaller proportions too) is pretty aghast at what he's been allowed to do.

A friend of mine from Northern Ireland said everyone he knows feels sorry for us. Never thought I’d ever hear of anyone feeling sorry for America. A president does NOT have the power for some of the things he’s “been allowed” to do. It’s just nobody is stopping him. It’s disconcerting to attempt to explain to, for example, my aunt, who though in her 80’s does not have dementia, yet will believe outlandish accusations given her by her chosen political party.

What worries me is the fact that Trump hasn't been stopped from doing the terrible things he has done and furthermore has not been punished in the slightest. This has given him a false ( or is it) sense of total power. I font think for one second that he will accept any election result other than a victory for Donsld J Trump. Even if he loses he will want to punish the voters before he leaves The White House and he will have untill the end of January to stir up his lunatic base...and he will...while maintaining as much'plausible deniability' as possible. With winter firing up another, stronger spread of Covid-19 and Trump denying the veracity of the election, should he lose, the next five or six moths are going to be possibly explosive.

Winter 2020 could make the Civil War look like a tea party.

tasselhoff - 16 Aug 2020 12:14:34 (#5 of 86)

It's all the venal republicans going along with his blatant lies and power grab that boggle me. Is a brief dalliance with power really worth selling your soul for?

moto748 - 16 Aug 2020 12:15:54 (#6 of 86)

I think that's pretty offensive, Verdi. Americans feel more strongly about the Civil War, and its terrible death-toll, than we can ever imagine. Let's not cheapen it with comparisons to Trump.

I can't see that but I think there will be a significant increase in right wing domestic terrorist incidents (though they might be categorised as spree killings and "active shooters" rather than outright terrorism) especially if Cartman Trump loses a tight election.

Where are all the NRA nutters when they're needed against an out of control federal apparatus?

moto748 - 16 Aug 2020 12:18:23 (#9 of 86)

Agree, Tag.

Flying around in private jets, innit?

tasselhoff - 16 Aug 2020 12:21:40 (#11 of 86)

No, I mean all the white dudes dressed up in camo with loads of tactical gear and an AR-15. The rationale for their existence is to fight off the federal government when it goes rogue.

Snarlygog - 16 Aug 2020 12:22:23 (#12 of 86)

The Gravy Seals are just carb loading.

So why is nobody on either "side", apparently, doing anything to stop Trump? If they feel that strongly why are they not stopping Trump from creating the same sort of situation?

Moschops - 16 Aug 2020 12:33:24 (#14 of 86)

The Democrats are trying to beat him in an election

kvelertak - 16 Aug 2020 12:38:13 (#15 of 86)

That's complete and utter garbage - thousands upon thousands of Americans such as my partner, from progressives to never-Trumpers, are doing everything within their power to halt Trump.

WTF are you doing, armchair warrior?

tasselhoff - 16 Aug 2020 12:40:50 (#16 of 86)

I tweet stuff. That'll learn him.

Tagyourit - 16 Aug 2020 12:41:57 (#17 of 86)

I post amusing memes on Facebook. Fight the Power!

I suck in my breath, tighten my girdle and 'share' with fearless abandon.

<<Where are all the NRA nutters when they're needed against an out of control federal apparatus?>>

they're trying to keep NY from dissolving their organization. in the meantime, they're celebrating a 2-1 win in the 9th Circuit (west coast) last week that held it unconstitutional to ban magazines that hold over 10 rounds. you might need them to defend yourself, say the two.

all the active circuit judges will certainly be asked to review that "en banc." the ruling won't last if they do.

SLJ's famous quote on the AK47 is ringing in my ears...
