At what point will the USA cease to be a democracy?

Already the unelected Supreme Court can and is overturning democratic legislation. A court largely appointed by a minority party.

The entire electoral system, flawed at the best of times by an electoral college, is on its knees through gerrymandering.

One of the two main parties is fascist in all but its name and the entire political discourse of the nation revolves around fantastical debates about fake realities.

The big question is, if and when the US succumbs, what will the rest of the world do?

Your assumptions are questionable.

At best.

That shamanic capitol hill invading bloke who looks like the lead singer of Jamiroquai will be the next president.

Your assumptions are questionable.

Too right. The USA is not a democracy by any sensible measure.

I've never encountered a poster known as "vodka and coke" before.

The first time I got fall-down, vomit-it-all-up drunk was drinking vodka and cokes.

Not a good memory that one.

America...a democracy. Good to see there's some humour left.

The only way to avoid a a war seems to be to divide America in two.

Let the Democrats have the wealthy, educated, cultured and civilised states ( plus those that show promise) And the Repubs can have the dusty, grubby, thick as mince, gun toting, illiterate states.

Seems fair.

Verdigris - 09 Dec 2021 23:58:00 (#7 of 202)

At least in North Korea they are forced to conform. Yanks do it voluntarily.

I suspected the first, I knew the second, but we could have a little fun, watch all the Euros make cracks about American democracies while ignoring what's going on in their own countries.

Yes, we Limeys are following you down the shitter. Shame we left Europe.

I think the issue is that we've all been taking democracy somewhat for granted - at least through my lifetime, and I'm quite elderly now.

Democracy isn't guaranteed at all, it's actually a bit amazing that you guys on those islands and we in these 50 states have managed to take it for granted for so long.

Zimtkuchen - 10 Dec 2021 00:55:13 (#11 of 202)

We had a change of government here yesterday. Nobody died in the process.

Historic ignoramus's speak! Loudly, but ignorantly.

Things today are far quieter than they were some two hundred years ago. Not to mention the period of 150 years ago. Etc., unendingly one hopes.

They never liked you anyway.

The USA is actually going backwards in its democratic path. Bearing in mind it’s only really been a ‘proper’ democracy since the 1960s, it’s still quite young and so aberrations are hardly surprising.

The vote rigging redistricting by the GOP is dragging the country back towards its segregated days. And the GOP’s embrace of plans for overthrowing it’s opponents’ electoral victories is closer to somewhere like Turkey or Hungary. With right wing militias and street mobs increasingly involved, it’s not melodramatic to make comparisons with 1930s Italy.

As regards socks, I was posting under this monicker on the old GUT for ten years. I tried this place at the very start, but only recently started posting properly.

I don’t really care who believes me though, it’s just the internet.

GyratingTrampoline - 13 Dec 2021 07:38:13 (#16 of 202)

Surely, the fact that europe is also turning away from democracy makes the retreat from democracy in the US even more concerning, rather than calling for "I know you are but what am I" exchanges?

col2001 - 13 Dec 2021 07:42:33 (#17 of 202)

Agreed.

It's pretty clear that the democracy we do have in the world is partial and vulnerable.

TheSwearingBear - 13 Dec 2021 08:00:34 (#18 of 202)

A hundred years ago an insurrectionist would be hanged, fifty years before that they'd be shot, now they whinge in jail about not having gluten free food.

GyratingTrampoline - 13 Dec 2021 08:27:37 (#19 of 202)

You say that like it's a bad thing.

But it's only the footsoldiers who face legal consequences

Apologies. I'm a mere hole in a sock, as I never knew what GUT was.
